What to look for when buying a Hawk.

I've been looking for a Hawk but everyone seems to want a lot of money for them.

Last week, I checked out an '88 and the owner wanted $2k. It was crashed and poorly repaired. Evidence of crash were: spray painted bondo tank and front rim bend. The bike also had a big hessitation on acceleration and the tach meter would jump up to crazy numbers even though the engine was reving at a consistent speed. Finally, the frame had two holes one each side covered by rusty bolts... I'm guessing it had a fairing at one point. Oh, the seat was scratched up because of a squirrel (says the owner).

I'm not sure if it's just me thinking that's way too much for it's condition because the ad for the bike disappeared within a day... must've sold right away.

First and most important is the paper work. Is it in order? Are you buying it from the person named on the title as the owner? Only buy the bike form the person named on the title. Do not buy a bike that the so called current owner has a title but it is not in his name but it is signed on the back. This can be a title nightmare.

I personally do not pay with cash. I find out how much they want for the bike or car and have even taken the seller to my bank and had them make out a Bank Cashier Check with the VIN number of the bike in the amount of the sale. By doing this I have a paper trail with a name and Vin number of who I got the bike from. Also a few years ago we still had to have stuff like this not NOTERIZED and my Bank would do it for free.
Things to look out for because some of them are easy ti over look when you really want something.

          Condition of the:
Tires : new ones installed will set you back around $200-$300 for the set
Chain and sprockets condition: An easy $200 if they are shot!
Forks: Are the seals leaking, is there rust on the tubes, are they straight?
Battery: Does it start without the aide of a battery tender or jumper cables?
Brakes: Do they work? If the bike has been sitting they can rust in place.
Gas tank: Is is rusted inside? Dents? Does the key fit it?
Throttle cables: Does the throttle turn easy both ways and does it return by itself?
Lights: Do they work? Are there turn signals on the bike? Do they work?
Engine: No load knocks or ticks that the seller tells you are normal??

How does the bike look? This will depend on how much money you want to spend to get it the way you want it to look. The better it look the less it is going to cost.

Does the seller have the tool kit, a repair manual, owners manual that they will give you. They might have it and just forgot they had it and will give this stuff to you.

Remember you have to think about the cost of taxes, title change, insurance when thinking about your Hawk budget.

Well I have seen NICE ones go upwards of $4000 (and there are a BUNCH of NICE ones on this forum but none for sale)

I like to find a solid one for less, fix it up and sell it for more. Sold my Last one for $2000.

Remember everyone sells their motorcycle in the summer so they can get more for it.
