    Riding weather

I was wonderling for a while now: how much differ the riding conditions per counrty?

In Holland, autumn`s coming and the weather has turned **** in an instant. My riding season is about 2-3 months.
I ride all year round, but I mean the good, warm and dry days.

How`s the weather in the UK? and the US? Do you guys have good weather all year round?

What was the start of all this?
When did the cogs of my Hawk begin to turn?
Perhaps it is impossible to grasp the answer now,
from deep within the flow of time...

But, for a certainty, back then,
I loved it so much, yet hated so many.
I hurt others and was hurt myself...

Yet even then, I rode like the wind,
    whilst my laughter echoed
    under cerulean skies...

I try and ride all year around but January makes it hard. I am just checking out heated gloves for the bike at the moment. was not a big fan of the heated grips I was using last year the fingers got too cold while the palms of the hands were to hot.
Its not bad here the temp gets to about -5 to 5 deg C in winter. so ill be out there.

Usually we can ride about half the year here but lately we've been able to ride until late november if you're brave enough.
Typically from april to october but lately march to november.

Here in the UK you can comfortably ride about 2/3 of the year. I'll be winterizing the bike from the end of October until the end of Feb / beginning of March. I'll be storing in my parents garage then as I'm a bit worried about it down the side of my house as I have a few loose tiles and don't really fancy a big dented tank

in Southern Ontario (most south in Canada,) riding season is dictated (almost) entirely by snowfall. Some years are shorter, some longer, but 7 months easily, 9 months sometimes. Some years there's so little snowfall, that you can sneak a couple of December rides in, if you don't mind -5 to -10oC. Just watch out for the cold tires, and only go out if the roads are dry. Luckily, our Government makes us buy a FULL YEAR of riding insurance, making these little jaunts possible.
There are really only ~ 3 months of really good weather where the night temperature stays over 20oC. In May and September, mornings and lights are a little chilly. I rode to work this morning it was 10oC. By Midday, it'll be 28.

you have to realise how HUGE the united states is.

up north.. alot of people are packing their bikes up now, as its getting cold.

here in the south east on the coast.. its going to get cold, but rarely below 50*F (10*C) , and theres really only 15 days a year, if that, when its below freezing... so you can ride year round if you have the gear.

go further west, but stay in the south, and temps vary.. in the mountians, no you cant ride in winter.. in the desert, you can, but its cold at night.. etc.

you have to pick a specific area to really answer the question.

i think its safe to say i have been around.

when i was in southern California i could ride all year long and i did!

when i moved to Montreal for a few years i could only ride 4-5 months a year. i pushed it going out when it was 34F or 3C degrees.

moved to Chicago area because i missed year long riding. now it gets cold here but its not a deep freeze for 6 months strait. so i can get out about once a month during the cold season. just enough to get my riding fix when im jonesin really bad.

my brother lives in Florida and you can ride all year there (lucky bastard)

i got family in Texas and it gets cold there but again its only for a week or two at a time (like Chicago but not as bad) so in between cold spells you can take the bike out and ride.

i know Las Vegas gets a snow fall or two a year.

like dude said US is a big place and we have a selection of climates to choose from.

Man, looks like I really am the most unforunate of the lot
well, 2 years back I was still riding around rather comfortable in november so I guess even I can get 2/3 of the year if I`m lucky

it`s just this damn sea climate. I`m amazed that the UK-ers can ride so often. whenever I see footage of the UK it`s either raining, or it has just stopped raining. wich means that the tarmac is soaking wet.

I live in southern California USA. we get atleast 300 sunny days a year. I dont mind being a bit cold in the winter. I ride year round maybe 20 days a year where ridding would be suicide!

I voted 3/4 of the year, but last year I rode through the whole of winter. I use my bike for getting to and from college... it's only 10 miles, but I've been through sleet, hail, and light snow. Riding in the rain at night happens quite often. One thing I've learnt is that the bike has more grip in the wet than you'd think... although I try not to push my luck.

In Atlanta, I ride pretty much all through the year.
Maybe not in Jan or Feb sometimes because that's when it's REALLY cold and I don't have the gear for it.
I'm looking forward to it though as I'm gonna strip my Hawk and detail her GOOD.

summer`s been shit. and autumn and winter here mean no (fun) rides due to rain, more rain and even more rain. and let`s not forget the ass freezing cold.

Wow only 4-5 months of riding in Montreal? I live in Ottawa which is pretty much the same climate as Montreal (1 1/2 west of Montreal) and I can easily ride 7 months of the year and sometimes more depending on the year.I was on on New Year's day last year for a quick ride.

In Vermont we get a chilly April and May, nice June, July, August and September, then a chilly October. After that there are days when it is 50 degrees f or better but overall not very good riding weather. But with global warming Vermont is scheduled to get two more months of summer like weather (thats right, global temp rises are now on the schedule!) so over the next ten years or so the riding season will grow a few days every year. I spend the winter dreaming of warm weather rides...
