    Wheelie question for you experts

    Hey guys,

So today I was in the park with a friend and I decided to try a wheelie on the Hawk, I had heard a lot of people say it was hard to power wheelie them and only barely come up etc. etc., so I was only trying to feel where I needed to be, I went to about 4K, rolled on then off (not full throttle either) and a slight tug, holy hell it went up about 3.5 ft. before I chopped the throttle, it was just so unexpected...So she came down fine and that was it for today...

Question is do you hurt your bike by having the front end come down off a wheelie like that so fast...Since this was my first time on the Hawk I didn't expect it to come up so easy and that is why I chopped the throttle and let it fall...Normally on other bikes I set them down real easy but this just suprised me b/c it was so unexpected to what I thought should/would happen...I feel like such an asshole for letting the front hit the ground that fast, really am concerned if I might have done, or you could do any damage or anything...Please let me know, thanks,

    Jason

1 time isn't too bad, do this all the time and you will have to rebuild your fork legs

I have seen much worse though, 2 years ago I had a learning period (it's called "stage" here) at a famous Dutch frame-builder, and some idiot brought in a Kawasaki ZX6-R with a ripped steeringhead, from wheeliing it all the damn time

He just forget to put her down gently every time though....

ya 20-40 wheelies a season and maybe less than 5 come down hard and i never blew a fork seal.

that would be the first thing to go (i would hope)

Ok, that makes me feel better, yeah nothing was leaking or anything, hell it didn't even feel that hard, like I said it isn't like I was vertical and slammed it down with the brake, just let off the throttle from about 3' up or so and let her come down on her own weight, I just hate thinking that I hurt my bike, guess I have OCD lol...Anyway, I am redoing my forks anyway very soon to go to the f3 mod, I was wondering should I replace all internals of the fork???? Or just some???? Can someone give me a parts list that should be new????

Also second question, what about my stering stem bearings? I imagine there is 2 right, one at the top one at the bottom??? I haven't consulted my manual yet, just guessing? Anyway how hard are they to replace and should I even replace them if nothing is wrong??? I just figured while I was at the forks, might as well do that too since it is 20 years old???...What is the sign that you need to replace you stering stem bearings?

        Thanks guys!

Wheelies are stupid....there is no skill in wheelieing all the time......youll wear gear dogs down in your transmission(causing false neutrals) stretch your chain faster.....posibble steering stem bearing damage......learn how to corner thats what the hawk is for...raising your skill as a rider......not trying to prove to everyone how big your peepee is.......

sound like some needs to be nice......

Let me gess you cant wheelie and or like to pick on people that you cant meet face to face. Let see if some one wants to wheelie let them. Dont say that something that some one wants to do is stupid. Thats like saying that a mod you want to do is stupid.

Most of the time I'm quit but your getting me a little mad with your comments on some stuff.

So what we want to wheelie its not like we want to turn the Hawk into a stunt bike and do stunt shows with it. All we want to do is have a little fun with the bike. The other thing is that we all know how to corner with the bike. Why do you think some of us got the bike? I Want to say that most people on here got the bike because of the handlying of bike.

I have no idea how many times I have done wheelies on Hawks other than * a bunch*.Incredibly,I am not only still alive but the bikes are fine. The only bikes I have ever harmed doing wheelies are blowing out the seals in the Mille twice - Ohlins suck in that regard- and crunching the bellypan of my 7R after too much speed turned lofting a crest into a jump.

Wheelies are pretty dumb, but they are fun...and fun is why I ride.Besides,I can't corner a bike worth a crap

Hard landings can flat spot your front rims. The Brembo wheels on Ducatis used to be notorius for flatspotting from wheelies. Why do you think it's so hard to find a straight F3 front wheel these days? The upside is that unless the flat spot is severe you will never know it's there until you change your tires and spin the rim on a balancing stand. Also they can be straightened for a small fee.

                      Doc, you feelin it too?
I am getting this weird feeling... De ja vu', I think it's called? Weren't we just arguing about wheelies the other week? I think this is what we came up with.
Those who can wheelie, will and continue to do so. Those who can't, don't, and criticize those of us who can.

And Deadlego, I also took offense to someone's harsh reply but... There is no use trying to defend or justify a wheelie like I did the last time this came up. It seems this subject is as controversial as if we are talking about Abortion or Gay rights or something! It will just go on, back and fourth forever!!!!

I wheelie... and I have wheelied in inappropriate areas at inappropriate times.

I don't know what it is but I think it is important to acknowledge the fact that wheelies, stoppies, and "draggin Knee" on the street is NOT smart.

I am not saying they are not fun and I am not saying I haven't done them. I am just not condoning it either.

                        Get my point?

It may be a little hypocritical but I just get the impression from some kids I meet that the only thing they wanna do on a bike is stunt or look cool.
That was important to me at one point but it is not anymore... I feel I have changed in a positive way.

Watch Moto GP. There is a time and a place for big crazy stand up wheelies (At the finish) How did they learn to do those?

Stoppies teach you the limits of your breaking power so practicing those are great! It is just that "throwin one up" on Main Street at 11pm to "impress the hotties" can get a little droll.

Maybe it is just that I am "over" the novelty of stunting and have turned a new chapter called Racing.

So maybe I should post a disclaimer in my Sig...

Doc, stunting is pretty lame in my opinion, not my cup of tea but you need to perfect the wheelie so when you win a race you can circulate on your cool down lap in style. -Crash

This got a little off my original topic, all I wanted to know was if my one landing from 3.5' up hurt anything, that's it.

When your fork seals blow, you'll know it was too much.

But, yeah, it seems the older you get, the less certain things matter and wheelies were never high on my priority list for becoming a better rider.
