    Rejetted: Testride

So my hawk would not wheelie, period. It would not break 100 mph no matter how long I held it wide open. I was pretty disappointed with its overall performance.

I took the tank off to fix some dents and paint it so I decided to pull the float bowl and check the jets. I found that the main jets were smaller than stock, with a free flowing exhaust and a K&N filter. I ordered a jet kit and it got here on Friday so I went to work getting it installed.

I got it all put back together and just had to go try it out. I had just got done putting the decals on the tank and spraying the clear coat, so using the gas tank was out of the question. I filled up a R/C car fuel bottle and zip tied it to the airbox and went for a spin.

I rode up the road about a mile or so to warm it up a little. I was very impressed with the throttle response and the fact that it would actually pick up speed in high gear when rolling on the throttle from cruising speed. I turned around and headed back toward the house. In first gear I rolled on the throttle and got the RPMs up to 4-5 grand and then nailed it. The front end went straight up in the air! At that time I thought about my little quart sized plastic fuel tank that was zip tied on and decided I better get out of the throttle before it fell off. The front end came down and reminded me that I had loosened the clip ons to adjust them, and had apparently not tightened them enough. The right bar spun around up toward the headlight and I swerved toward the ditch. I got it all straightened out and hammered it again. I got the bike up to 85 MPH on the short straight away, it would only reach about 70 there before.

Yesterday I put the tank back on and rode over to my parents house. There is a spot where I pull out onto a four lane road and after a short distance it narrows back down into a two lane. With the bike as it was before, I could reach 85 MPH before reaching the two lane. Now the speedo reads just over 105 in the same distance.

Needless to say, I am very happy with my little Hawk now. It's kinda funny, when I bought the thing I was kind of embarrased to ride it, and very disappointed with the power. Now I finally got the whole thing painted and cleaned up and it probably has twice the power. Dad was looking at it yesterday and said "That doesn't look anything like the bike you brought over a couple months ago.".

Sorry for the long read, I just had to share my story with someone, and figured you all would understand.

Must be a missouri thing. I just rejetted mine this weekend, and added some uni's with pretty much the same result. Mine suprised the heck outta me around a corner when it came up on the back wheel. Needless to say I liked my bike, now I love it.

You crazy bastard. That's some fun times right there. Not that I'm averse to them myself. I've intentionally gotten the front wheel in the air maybe 200 times in the 3 months I've owned mine. It's one of the funnest parts of owning a torquey, light bike.

      What mains did you use?

        I used a 162 rear and a 165 front. It pulls hard.

            Chris, mine is a 650.

Isaac, I used the Dynojet Stage 2 kit. (I know, not near as good as Factory brand, but I was broke) I used the biggest mains, 144. I don't really know how the numbers correspond with the Keihin jets, but I know they are not the same from jetting my ATV's and dirtbikes in the past.
And as far as the wheelie thing goes, I know what you mean. I rode my bike again today and every time I took off I had to pull a wheelie. I am just pumped that it will actually do it now.

I made very similar experience like you do, Brad.
Though I stick with the orig parts that I found in the carbs.
Only thing I did there was get me one slightly bigger jet,
              that means bigger front jet swapped to the rear cyl carb.;
front cyl now has 145 jetting.
Additionally the needles went a bit up by 1mm thru 2 tiny washers under each needle.
The old air filter was discarded and replaced by a K&N.

              The result was dramatic.
I never knew the motor could run beyond red line so easily.
Before that the engine used to stall at 7500 and felt quite numb, phlegmatic.
Let me tell you the hawk top speed is way beyond 120mph
              Ask a german

The hawk responds to rejetting very well but yet you have done only
              half the job.
What left is to readjust the pilot jet and carbs synchro.
Need a help to guide you through this?

I did readjust the fuel screws. I just turned them out to 2.5 turns out from seat like the directions said. I have to pull the tank back off next week to make some other changes so I figured I would fine tune it then. I will fine tune the fuel screws and sync the carbs then. I have a manual and a vacuum guage, it looked like it would be pretty easy to do. I was just too anxious to get the tank on and go for a ride to take the time to do it then.

Not yet, can't wait though!! I think I have just enough paint left over from painting the rest of the bike to paint it. I'll probably have that thing stuck on there before the paint is dry.

My Hawk is soooooo down on power... I can't even dream of the results you've got there!

Bought Unis from Hord and have yet to fit them. I have a unknown jet kit from the PO and a free-flow exhaust (like, hacksawed collector pipe freeflow). Any idea what jet kit I ought to be running? Any idea how to tell what I got?

                      Hord? You here?

Yeah I didnt think my 650 would respond that great, but it did and I'm glad. Now as for syncing the carbs, I tried and I think I got it right. I barrowed a set of mercury sticks from a guy I work with and just turned one screw then another, and another till the levels were close to even. Seemed to work great.

The jets in your unknown kit should be marked with the brand if you look real close. I can't speak from experience, but from what I have read you should probably use a Factory stage 3 or Dynojet stage 7. Don't take my word for it though, get an answer from someone with experience with that particular setup.

Yes, that is right, you should use a F3.0 or DJ7 kit with pods and open exhaust. The main diff. between the various jet kit stages are the main jets supplied. When you take off or open up the stock airbox you radically change the pressure differential seen at the needle jet nozzle, hence the need for much bigger mains. Only way to find out whatcha got Doug is to open the carbs and have a look.
