Watch out for left turners. My friend can tell you why.

Tonight on the way back from a photo shoot, I decided to stop by my friend Andres' house. I rode that direction, and on the way stopped for gas. While I was pumping it, I saw him ride by apparently on his way back from the gym, maybe for the last time.

I hopped on my bike and went after him, and a few seconds later saw pure horror. By pure coincidence I happened to be on the same road at the same time he was, just seconds behind the worst motorcycle accident I've ever seen. The moment I saw his clothes and the bike I knew who it was, Andres, my best friend next to my only brother.

He was lying down with people over him and there was blood coming out of his helmet. I don't want to describe how mangled his arms and legs were, so I won't.

I apologize for the shaky pictures but I was crying half the time. I thought he might die on the scene.

A lot of paramedics thought that too. SR 436 was closed for almost an hour while they stabilized him, prepared him for medivac, and then cleaned up. That helicopter airlifted him out of there.

Note in the picture his skidmark at bottom left, the white truck just past the cops at the right of the screen, and his bike at the far left. The end of the skid is the point of impact. The driver turned directly into his path, and he hit her broadside. She "didn't see him."

We were waiting what seemed forever at the hospital for updates on his condition. When he was airlifted, I thought he was going to die. Then doctors were hinting that he might be paralyzed, though he was conscious the whole time. His left leg was badly broken in several places. His left arm, elbow, and shoulder are broken in multiple places, as is his right arm.

His helmet had a slight crack and some gouging. It probably saved his life, because it hit the truck along with his body, stopping him instantly. He's coherent, and is going into surgery as I type this to get pins and plates put into his arms, leg, and foot.

Nonetheless, he managed a thumbs up:

He's moving everything, he's lucid, but he forgets things you tell him because of the concussion. He's gonna be ok, but it's gonna be a long recovery. Let's all wish him the best.

      Oh SHIT!!
      Send our best regards dude.
One good thing though Isaac is that you have some pretty good images there which prove without a doubt what happened.
That way the insurance company (I assume shes insured) cant give your mate any BS.

      Good luck on his recovery.

        Thanks guys.

So far he's doing better by the moment, though doctors say recovery will take years.

Today he had several operations that took a total of about 7 hours. They put pins and metal throughout his arms and left leg and foot. They also did some surgery to restore bloodflow to his left arm, left shoulder, and left leg. He doesn't have feeling in his left arm below the elbow. They're hoping his circulation and feeling will improve by tomorrow. Otherwise he's going to need more surgery.

He's just lying on the bed in the ICU right now, sleeping and hopefully healing. He did talk to us, and was in as best of spirits as possible considering the situation.

I felt he was pretty lucky, especially after being in the hospital today again. A family waiting in the same room as us got the news that their son/brother is a quadraplegic. The nurse working with Andres said that almost never does he see someone come into the ICU from a motorcycle accident without head trauma and needing a respirator. Andres had neither.

So we'll see how he is tomorrow. Let's hope for the best.

yeah, man... tell him we're all pullling for him.
just goes as a reminder to always look two or three times when operating the big smash machines and remind all of those you know who drive anything- four wheels or two.

                  Isaac -
Tell your boy there he's got 400+ people here pulling for him hard. I'm sure I speak for the rest of the Forum when I say that our thoughts, prayers, collective positive karma, all that - are going out to him.

That helmet probably saved his life. Now I'm praying he's blessed with some amazing doctors, and the determination to exceed all their expectations.

Oh man Isaac, I really feel for you and your buddy. Whats with all these lane violations anyway ?!

Onto the soapbox now: We need laws that crack down hard on drivers doing just what happened to your friend- in most states an accident like that will result in little more than a $50 fine! How about a one year suspension, a mega fine and, in the case of vehicular manslaughter (thankfully not what happened in this case) some real jail time. Only then will people get that they need to be watchful, and start doing so!

join the American Motorcyclist Associations efforts to put some real laws on the books that will help us avoid what happened here... AMADirectlink.com

they have a program called motorcyclists matter which lobbies for tougher laws to protect vulnerable road users like us from this type of violation. With all the drive through fast food eaters, cell phone users, new parents checking on their kids in the back seat, etc, we are more vulnerable than ever.

Some motorcyclists swear by the pulsing light system to make themselves more visible. The only other defenses are to slow down, keep eyes pealed and maybe swerve a bit when approaching intersections so that your light moves and hopefully wakes up anyone about to turn into your path. that and pray. Off the soapbox now...

Man, what a sad story. I'm glad to hear he is going to recover.
