is this a good deal? (RC51 front mod...)

well, thru a couple people, i found this guy that has a couple RC51s hes parting out.

    i sent him this email:
    hello,
i have a honda hawk, and i want to upgrade to a RC51 front end.

i need the SP1 triple clamps, SP1 or preferably, SP2 forks the front wheel, rotors, calipers, master cyl and
clipons, and maybe even the switches on the bars...

basically, i need the whole front end.

someone mentioned you were parting out RC51s.... think we could work out some
    kind of deal?

    this is his reply:

The Hawk project sounds pretty interesting. If you can nab a set of forks I believe I can provide everything else you need. I have another sp1 for parts. Front wheel is good, forks and trees bent. Calipers , brake/clutch M/C'S , rotors, switches, axle, spacers and clip on's I have also. You would have to buy triple trees AS I HAVE NO OTHER GOOD TREES. I And give me a couple days time to strip my other sp1. 125-rotors, 50-calipers, 40/ea.(80)- bars, 225-wheel, 60/ea.
(120). Pay these prices, which I think are FAIR, and I'll throw in the switches axle and spacer's at no charge to sweeten the deal up a bit. That's 600 total. Please advise. Any interest in a Hondaline HAWK GT BIKINI/UPPER FAIRING??

    Thanks,

    Richard
so basiclly... thats an entire front end, EXCEPT forks and triple tree..... for $600.

    is that a good deal?
at first i went "whoa, that got high quick"... but then i started thinking about it... that is alot of parts.... the whole braking system, wheel, axles, clipons, switches.....

is that a good deal? just a fair price? hes trying to screw me?

im not new to projects, but im just jumping back into the bike world, and man, im getting sticker shock everywhere i look.. i thought the "Corvette tax" on car parts was high, but damn, the bike tax makes it seem small...

(corvette tax refers to the fact that a part, say for a camaro cost X amount.. the EXACT SAME part, sold for a Corvette, costs more. same thing with bikes)

my opinion the price is far if your going to honda and getting brand new parts. but your not, your not even getting parts off a 100% running bike. he dosnt have the forks because they were bent, meaning the rim "COULD" be bent the front axle "COULD" be bent. did he measure those? then what are you getting??? alot of little stuff you can pick up for far less money.
you need to ask your self how much do you want to spend because the triple and the forks arnt going to be cheap either.

im trying to find parts for a 04-05 cbr 1000 usd front end to put on my hawk im hoping to spend 300-400 been watching ebay alot latly. trying to do something on a budget ebay is the only way to go. i suggest gauging your deal with other rc51 parts on ebay.

I did the swap, the prices listed are the going rates.

Check on speedzilla in the honda sport twins classifieds.

        jaysun0ne:
while im also wondering how you bend forks and triple trees without bending a rim or other frontend parts..... ive heard only good about the parts from this guy... and ive seen stranger things happen.. so i guess i'll give it a try.

Try owning a Ducati... (ducati tax)

For comparison, I got a complete tricked out, race ready F4i front with wave rotors and fork tubes off Nicky Haydens Erion Honda racebike for $650. I think you could find a complete front for about that on ebay. Keep looking.
You still need fork tubes... How much will those run?

little late now.. i already bought it.. it should be here early next week.
this guy is great to work with though... i mean, hes getting me alot of parts, and that $600 includes shipping.... wheel, fender, rotors, calipers, mastercyl, levers, axle ,spacers, clipons, throttletube, grips, bar weights, and tripletree....

it all adds up quick separately... and hes footing the shipping in that.. just shipping the wheel would be $$$ otherwise.

anyway, i hear you on the "exotic" tax thing... i guess thats a downside of branding... if you're established one way, it makes everything cost more because they can.

I paid 500 for the forks, trees, calipers, clipons for an SP2 , 230 for an SP2 front wheel, and 35 for the front fender

So $765 for everything......just figured i would post this for reference

                    For reference:

I paid $675 for everything and the forks had already been reworked to my weight, luckily. I bought them on rc51.org. I knew the guy so this helped with the price.

If you need the forks reworked, I recently sent the forks off my 2001 RC51 to J.D. Hord (www.hordpower.com). Great guy and I highly recommend him for ANYTHING you need (all makes and models).

yea, the forks i have now have just been done by Dan Kyle, but i'll need the springs replaced since i weigh considerably more then what its sprung for.

everywhere i look people are pointing me to JD Hord, and noone has said anything bad yet. lol.

i have some unipods and a jetkit coming from him right now.. after the rest of the bike/suspension is done, next winter, he'll most likely be working on my motor.. lol.

You will be pleased with the Dan Kyle forks. He is very popular in the RC51 circles.

I prefer HordPower! J.D. is good people!

BTW, congrats on becoming a mod. I will try my best to make your job very difficult! :P
