It seems NY state passed a new muffler law because of all the complants of loud bikes and cars/trucks....Basics are that bikes made after 1979 must have more or less stock noise levels....
Not wanting to discuss the law details but the effect it has on my 89 Hawk....The muffler is a bought used carbon fiber D&L canister...It's much louder than stock but not like an open pipe...The engine with this muffler, pods and rejetting ran very well. Friends with more poweful bikes were surprised by the overall performance.....To quiet the bike I made a baffle from a 10 inch length of 1.5 inch OD perforated tubing with a soild cap on one end..I welded this tube inside the 2-1/4 inch inner muffler core. So the exhaust gas first enters the tube, then through the perforations into the muffler core and out the exit.
The baffle quieted the sound somewhat and gave it a deeper sound without the rap when the throttle is backed off...Out on a road test the power level felt a bit better..but...full throttle acceleration in fourth gear caused noticable clutch slip at over ther 5000 rpm that was not there before the baffle.... Ah, more power and less noise...And a new clutch, lol.
