  • Hydrostatic Fuel Gauge

Hello, I’ll be starting my build soon and have been looking into fuel gauges that can be retrofitted to the hawk. I can across LSK and they have a hydrostatic fuel gauge kit. This metering device is installed inline with the fuel flow and meters pressure in the hose. Sounds a bit strange but what do I know

I emailed them about the hawk and specified that a Mikuni mechanical fuel pump will be installed and here is what I got back in response:

“yes, you can use our gauges. Best way is still to make additional fuel output from the tank and connect the fuel pressure sensor to that. Or you can just connect the T-plug with the fuel pressure sensor after the petcock, it should also work well if the petcock is clean and there is not a slight vacuum after the petcock when the engine is running”

Now, I could be wrong but with the Mikuni fuel pump won’t there be a slight vacuum pull when the engine is running?

    Any thoughts on this voodoo?

    cheers!

The pump has vacuum only on one side of a diaphragm to generate the pumping action. It's actually sealed from the fuel otherwise it would just suck fuel into the intake.

And it actually uses pulses in the vacuum. A constant pressure wouldn't cause the pumping action.

And you might not need a tee fitting, IIRC the pump has 2 outlets in the casting.

ParcNHawk thanks for the info! I may give this a go as I’m more curious than anything and it would be rad to have some sort of gauge. Thanks!

If that works, that would be awesome.

Right! I wish it was more of like an indicator light as it’s a bit large. Could put it on the side of the steering neck area.

This could be a nice addition, should it work in our application. Keep us posted if you do go in that direction.

Better then mine.. Mine involves the bike shutting off and me swapping to the reserve.. So you have a leg up on your organizational skills on some of us.

I'm also interested if/how this works. keep us up to date.

Hey all, unfortunately I decided against this kit. I will just be running a KOSO or Acewell speedo and plan to use the trip meter functions instead. I do think this LSK pressure gauge could work though and would be interested to see someone use one! At least now we have it floating around for others to see and possibly test out

Here is a simpler fuel guage solution I stumbled across on the web. No wiring or vacuum issues.

When I made my large tank with a Hawk tank bottom I should have put in a float--now that the tank is all done and perfectly painted it would be difficult to mount, to say the least. Any my Koso has the capability to monitor and show, too.

Yup, fiberglass. But very low tech. Could we just add a T to the Hawk petcock, and run a length of transparent hose upward? Liquids seek their own level.

Could be similar in approach to checking float level I suppose haha
