  • Any "ThumperTalk" or CRF230F carb gurus here...?

Man, what a crazy couple of weeks...!

My Daughter's youngest Son mentioned that his 2004 CRF230 was "Making a noise" so I took a look, well, a listen first and said shut it down. Seems that the intake valve head popped right off the stem and we all know what that does...

I installed a new piston, rings, pin and clips, head (complete) and cover, rockers, cam chain and gear, gaskets etc... the bore was not harmed. I did split the cases to ensure that any piston debris that made its way down to the lower end that I cleaned it out.

So, all back together, in fact I had Jackson, said Grandson come over to help finish up the top end and install it into the frame, bolts it up and fire it for the first time. Runs great and now I am at the break in period, run until warm for a few cycles, no high revs for a bit etc...

The carb pilot screw was turned out a turn and a half which proved to be too rich, so I backed it back to one turn and it hunts and still is producing a black sooty plug.

Now, I told you all that to ask if anyone has a good, reliable contact at Thumper Talk that I can talk with...? I signed up and cannot for the life of me sign in...! I try to log in and when prompted to use my user name, that gets me a message that I need to have the @ in there... WTF...?

I get no response from a password change request, nothin', nada... I had been a member there Years ago when I was riding XR400s but the email addy was different so I cannot even resurrect that log in.

So, I need a point of contact OR a carb expert here hopefully that can help me with what to do next.

I will drop the bowl and check that the pilot jet is a 45 and the main is a 120 but I do not know where to start on needle clip positions...!

Sorry for the long winded saga, I need some assistance.

    Appreciate you,
    Rob

Do these carbs have an overflow? Maybe the float isn't quite working and you are getting excessive fuel that way? Should be easy to test off the bike.

Aside from that, no reason why factory default settings would be that far off. Double check. Carbs aren't hard or scary, just massively tedious.

      ^^ i agree with him ^^

bad seal on float needle or very inaccurate float setting adjustment. make sure the carb vent is open.

I went through the carb in a very basic look while it was off the engine for the rebuild. Made certain that both jets were clear and cleaned the seat and needle for the floats.

I am now thinking that the Fuel mixture screw Might be missing the O ring because of the surging at idle.

When I get home later this week I'll pull the carb back off, thoroughly clean, dunk it in the ultrasonic cleaner and blow it out etc and check in that O ring...
Hoping not to need to mess with the needle, that spring and clip appears to be an ooops waiting to happen. If i do, i do.

I actually enjoy curing carb issues but this one is giving me the fits.
        Back soon,
        Thanks

Following the clue that it is surging, you might also check the rubber spigot that connects the carb to the head for cracks or air leaks.

A little soot on the plug might be normal for break in of new rings. BTW who did the rebore for you? Seeking recommendations myself!

Yup, all tight there on the runners and manifold, I went through all that. I did go change the needle to one groove down, raising the needle but I am not certain that is the end remedy. It does run great, and I have been told that I should go up on both the Primary and Main jets by a considerable amount.

Still in research mode. For now, the young'un is riding it. No surging so that advise might be onto something.

No over bore, the engine Stopped, and fast, the bore was measured and I decided to replace the piston and rings standard bore.

            Rob...
