    Steering Triple Clamp Question

The Bros and I went down a few weeks back and since then I've noticed the front end is off slightly to the right. What type of tool do I use to loosen the steering stem bolt and do I need to replace lock washer. What reference do I use to make sure it's tracking straight.

Sorry to hear you went down dude...

As for the tool? I wold loosen your triples, both forks first the right then retighten, then the left.

No need to mess with the steering stem bolt unless you tweakd the neck.

    Got pics?

If you haven't done it already and your going to inspect the front end forks maybe worth while replacing the head stock bearings for roller type.

since you bring that up jr how hard is it to remove the old seats (bearing housing) from the frame? i know im having trouble with the one on the triple and havent even tried to remove the ones in the frame.

forgot to mention over time my head nut came loose and for the longest time i thought it was my brakes

my bike had been down a few times and the last time the forks twisted the top triple in reference to the bottom triple (and i think that nocked the head nut loose) at first look i thought my forks where bent but my buddy forced the triples back in line with each other and the forks looked fine after that. but i started to get this pulsing during brakeing and changed my rotors (thinking they where worpt) turns out the head nut was really loose. live and learn right?

The one's in the frame drive out pudy easy just keep tapping around them. The one ine the stem kinda pain in arse to get off. Install on the stem i ended up frezing the bearing in nitrogen(ps mine are attack billit trees) the stem i got was oblong had to machine round(wtf )

Did this to the Hawk a few weeks ago... not that difficult... steel drift to beat out.. I mean "carefully remove" the old races from the frame.
I used an air chisel to remove the race from the stem.

Installation, I used a mixture of brass drifts, and heat/cold (propane torch/freezer) on the appropriate parts.

Nice kits from AllBalls... Doing my bro-in-laws SV next week...

I used a steel drift (bar) with a small bend in it. Then from the top of the frame knocked the lower one out and vice versa.

Yeah I tweaked the neck. The forks need to be turned ever so slightly to the left to track in a straight line. What to I use as a gauge to make sure it's straight (other than eyeballing it). Thanks.

It´s the easiest thing to do:
Get yourself a small stiff and neat panel to press onto the tubes where the sliding section is.
With the left hand pressing the left tube and the right hand the right one.

You´ll immeatedly feel if the panel sits flat on both tubes -
                        the fork is straight.

The forks are offset if the panel doesn´t sit evenly upon both tubes.

                        Need a photo?
