How do I clean my carbs?

I just know there's gotta be a varnish of old fuel in there... I never used to winterize!

how do I get in there?

what carb cleaner do I use?

and um, what do I do with it?

Get 3 cans of carb cleaner.. maybe 4.

    and a toothbrush

Remove carbs drain the bowls and use 2 cans to spray all over the outside, get em nice and clean with the tooth brush and spray some more.

now open the bottoms and spray in there, this is where you will see the floats and jets and varnish.

you can unscrew the jets and clean them as well while making a note of the jet size. spray all those lil holes clean...

Put em back together the way the came apart. Check float height and put the bottoms back on. (Make sure the gasket areas are clean)\

If you want you can also take the tops of and look at your needle and see where they are set but I wouldn't bother if the bike was running fine last fall.

Reinstall carbs and go for a ride.

Be very careful and make sure you get all the washers and O ring from the air adjustment screw. If you go blowing /squirting things some things could go flying. As experienced with DOC's carbs. I had to run a fine wire thru the main jets. U talk about varnish. Have your bike sit in a snow bank and then let it sit for 3 years .......

I see the young Mr. Doc has learned to get into the unknown. Believe me, I would not be able to handle a scalpel to someone. NO F N way. Good job Doc.

Docs method of carb cleaning is fine if your carbs still function and you are just trying to make them clean and pretty. If your bike won't run because of fouled carbs you are going to have to be more aggresive to see any results. I would advise that you not waste your money on those aresol carb cleaners or at least only use them to knock the dirt off the outside of the carbs before removing the float bowls.

I would suggest a liquid carb cleaner (Yamaha makes a great one). Get a tupperware container (with top) big enough for your carbs. Mix the cleaner as per instructions remove float bowls, drop in your carbs and but the top back on.

Next day and this is important chase out your jets and pilots with only COPPER WIRE. The reason is that copper is soft and wonty damage your carbs or jets. You can use a piece of your old wiring harness with the insulation stripped off. Now when they are as clean as you can get them put them back in the tupperware for another day.

Next day you can use your compressor to blow all the air and fuelways clear. Blow them dry and re-assemble.

I promise that this is the most effective way to clean your carbs and you can re-use and store you carb cleaner for many carb cleanings to come. (Try that with an aresol carb cleaner). Heck you can amaze your next door neigbor by starting the Yamaha Virago thats been leaning against his wood pile since Clinton took office. All with a little fresh gas a battery and your surefire carb cleaning technique.
Faster than your mother... She's what the pros use.
