I rode my Hawk on a longer than normal trip yesterday and parked it in the garage. And Today, there was a puddle of gas on the ground, which has never happened before. Without closer inspection, it appears to have come from the overflow hoses or such. What might cause this? Where do I begin to track down the problem. Thanks for the advise.

The only time my overflow hoses have left a puddle is when I'm filling the tank and it spills over. But that's at the gas station. It's not coming from your petcock, is it?1988 "BlackHawk" project

Have not inspected it closely yet, I will tonight. But I do believe it is coming from the hoses, not the petcock. What worries me is that it was a pretty good size puddle? The petcock was in the off position, so I can only assume that it was from the float bowls, but I REALLY do not understand how carbs work...so I am not too excited about the problem.'89 NT650 Hawk GT

Well, I inspected and found that my gas leak was coming from a worn out
gas filter - looks like the original! And in taking off parts to replace it - I went a bit overboard - as normal. Before I could stop, I had the entire Sub Frame off the bike and all kinds of wonderful and wacky ideas of how to make the bike look cleaner. That damn black under fender was the toughest thing ever to get out, and now that it is off the bike - I do not know if it will ever be back on it. I plan on fabicating a new, less obvious, under fender and new clean Licsence bracket. I also plan on replacing the original turn signals with flush mounts and hiding all of the wiring and fuel pump, etc... under the seat. Who needs a place to store tools?
I will post pics while I go. Please post any ideas or tips that might help/hinder my decisions.
Thanks!'89 NT650 Hawk GT

No, no - go for the integrated taillight! That way you're not drilling holes into a cowling that can't be replaced anymore! (As of recently, Honda doesn't stock it any longer). I've done it to my Hawk and can post pics if you want. I'm thinking about putting together a complete kit, too, if there's enough interest:
Fender eliminator with lighted license plate bolts,
Power converter to run signal lights to the tail light,
Flush-fitting aluminum divider (gets glued between the two bulbs with silicon adhesive),
and complete instructions.
The unsightly signal mounts (they look awful when you take off the signals, and leave them bare) and bungee rail (which only encourages you to crack an increasingly rare cowling, like I cracked mine) are removed with a Dremel cutting wheel. The end result is an incredibly clean looking tailsection. Who's interested? Should I put this together? The power converter is $35, the lighted bolts are $25, the rest is hand-cut stuff. So, $60 + materials and the work I have to put into it. The alternative is, I make the aluminum pieces (fender eliminator, and the bulb divider) for you and tell you where to get the rest of the stuff.
Somebody make me an offer. I'd like to make it easier for everyone else to do the project I just finished.1988 "BlackHawk" project

Please post up some pics, after seeing that I would have to saw off the bungee rails, i had to rethink what I was up to.
I custom fab'd a fender eliminator to hold the plate and strapped the rest of the electrical to the sub frame. I also had to custom fab a battery holder that works, but I am going to make a better one shortly.'89 NT650 Hawk GT

You don't have too, but it looks better. You can cut off the "ears" that hold the signal stalks and leave the bungee rails, but it's all fused together and it's hard to cut around the rails to remove the ears - it ends up not looking right. I tried that. How do I post pics here? I've never tried!1988 "BlackHawk" project

you will have to go join an online picture website - like shutterfly and upload the photos to their website. Then you can post that url between . It is a pain. Or you can just email pics to me at
