    VFR Tank

Good afternoon all you crazy Hawkers!

I'm about to get started on my winter project and just wanted to know if anyone had pics of a VFR Tank on their Hawk?

I just won good VFR tank off of eBay for $25 + shipping. I'm ready to do a little welding and banging to get the big mofo tank to fit.

I've already searched the HawkList archives for tips and I think I can do it without having to do too much modifications. Oh man.....can't wait for the until I don't have to stop 5-6 times a day to fuel up.

I can't wait to be able to ride to Shenandoah National Park and ride the length of Skyline Drive without worrying about running out of fuel.

So anybody got pics? If not, I'll post pics as I am working on it. BTW, does someone have a stock seat they'd like to trade/sell to me? I have this Corbin seat that's really comfortable but doesn't really appeal to me (it came with the bike when I bought it).

The tank is from a 95 VFR. It's slightly longer than the hawk tank (I expected this) and it looks like a new front mount will need to be fabricated. At least this gives me something to do this winter.

Don't know when I can start on this project. The weather's been pretty nice the past few days here in Richmond, so I've been riding everyday. Can't justify taking the bike apart when the weather is so nice outside. hehehe.... ops:

Here's the tank that I won. I will just need to remove that little dent and then try to fit the tank.

Sorry, the one I have is the King and Queen one. The one that you can add the back rest to.

I want the more streamlined look of the solo seat or even the stock seat. My girlfriend won't like it but hey, she can get her own bike right?

              Started the Install

              Hi all,

Just thought I'd drop a quick update. I got the VFR tank in and instead of welding the fuel guage hole shut, I'm going to try to wire it up and maybe have... (GASP).. a fuel gauge on a Hawk.

It's worth a try anyways. The rear mount on the subframe was causing me some issues so I took a reciprocating saw and sliced through the center mount point like butter. Now the tank fits really nice. The best part is that the metal tab on the front of the seat slides right under the rear tab of the fuel tank. Whew, time saved there. heheh With a little bit of frabrication for the mounts, I should be done with about 5 more hours of work.

The beefy tank looks nice. I can't wait until it gets warm enough for me to ride more than 90 miles without having to refuel. muuhhwaahahaha....

I'll take some pictures and post them when I get some free time. Have a good one!

Hey Yellafella, that mod you're doing is a good idea, if you have a chance to take picture that would be nice. I'm sure that lots of hawkers would be interested to see more, starting with me.

                  Thanks
Its not gone yet and I already regret selling it.

Bad new guys. Finally able to get the tank on and mounted relatively stable but now the stupid Corbin Seat won't mate to the tank. The Corbin seat has a big metal plate in the front that apparently is resistant to all kinds of violence with a hammer and pliers.

Dunno.... maybe I will try to do the Monster seat conversion. Since the mouth of the Monster seat is slightly wider, I think it should fit without issues. Plus, I've mutilated the subframe to get the VFR tank to sit into the frame. ehehe

As for pics, I'll take pics of my ugly bike this weekend if the in-laws don't dominate my time. My Hawk needs so much work....doh.....at least she runs well and doesn't mind some peg scraping once in a while.

                      Update:

Just received the Duc Monster seat. It fits the VFR tank perfectly. No shaping needed!

I did a mock-up of what it will look like with the tank and the seat on the bike. It's in my digital camera and I will upload tonight.

                      Next steps:

                      1. Chop the subfram and create new mounts for Monster seat.
                      2. Replace carb diaphram slides because mine are torn (ordered from Hord)
                      3. Put the carbs back together.
                      4. Mount VFR tank.
                      5. Mount Monster Seat.
                      6. Laugh maniacally !!!

I guess I'm just delerious because I haven't ridden in 3 days. The pics will be up tonite. Thank for everyone's patience. I know people are anxious to see the results.

Here ya go! Ignore the messy garage and the dirt and grime on the bike. ops:

Remember, this is just a mock up! Haven't done any subframe mods yet.
