    Transalp Engine

As far as I can tell, the transalp xl650 is physically a straight swap for a bros/hawk.
Can anyone who has done the africa twin or transalp engine swap tell me
what electrical issues I might have with the ignition/alternator connections if I go this route?

I have read that it is a bit of a challenge!

    thanks for any help

I think Guzzisti , according to his signature , has the 400 cc BROS. This swap is something I have in mind but only after my 400 engine gives up ... And that I think will take a while ...

700 cc probably you mean the standar NT650 engine plus the wiseco kit . Never heard if this kit can be apllied to a Transalp engine ...

Looking a little closer at the late model Transalp motor, it seems to be missing the engine mount behind the starter...So that's a no go then

Back to looking for a Africa Twin engine

Just checked my Deauville and it has the same engine mounting as the
Hawk be it its thro the frame and covered up with plastic covers. I can't belive Honda would change the casting on the same engine. Now I'll have to look at a Transalp at my local dealers.

This is the pic I was referring to:

I can't see that upper mounting point...

Several racers have used 600cc Transalp motors in Hawks so that they could run them in a higher state of tune for some race classes.I highly doubt Honda changed the cases when the Transalp grew to 647cc's-seems like craziness if they did but I of course have no way of knowing.

It may be crazy, but they did you know...If you look closely, you can see green grass behind the starter in this pic

Worth knowing if you were almost gonna buy a 650 transalp motor off ebay, like I was.

I think the earlier Transalp motor fits? It's the later 650 that appears to have been changed...

If anyone has further info on which motors will fit, it would be greatly appreciated!

you guys are funny, on the dual sport world many transalp riders want to fit Hawk engines on their bikes for more power, what gives..

Anyway i'm pretty sure the gear selector output shaft is a issue since on the Hawk engine is located down and back from the output shaft as you can see on the picture, were on the transalp the shift shaft is located down and forward.

so the transalp engine may fit on a hawk (if you make the proper linkage) but i don't think the hawk engine will fit the transalp since the frame and footpeg brackets are right there were the shift shaft is located

Makes it clear that it's a different casting! Thank you ricardo, you are a star
Didn't realise they were detuned, mebbe i gotta look for a bros 650 or Africa Twin...
