    Cotter Pin woes

Alright, this is the second time that the Cotter pin on my rear Axle has broke and the the nut starts to come off. Last time I took apart the rear end, replaced the Cush rubbers, then torqued everything down and replaced the cotter pin. I didn't get a cotter pin FOR my bike but one the bike whop found to fit the nut. The cotter pin looked really tiny and fragile and I guess ti was. Any tips on how I'm supposed to stake the cotter pin or size or special anythings for it?

    thanks

    Yikes!

I've got a box of assorted size pins, quite handy to have. The largest dia pin that fits is a 3.2mm by 50mm. I've measured the actual diameter as 3mm, and overall length, as 62mm. Dunno what the equivalent imperial size would be. My best guess is 1/8" x 2"?

Nothing special as far as staking is concerned, get the nut to torque, then turn the wheel to find a set of holes that line up. If none line up, adjust by tightening and push the pin through. Then bend the tabs that protrude so as to hold it in place. I've not had any problems with this size pin, held in this manner.

The other option is to get an "R" clip. I've seen others run this re-useable piece, but don't have any personal experience with it. I would assume you would need a 3mm clip with a radius of ~14mm to clear the 27mm nut? Can anyone confirm?

Now flip that R-clip up (In the pic it is laying flat so that the radius in on the nut, turn it up so the radius in on the end of the axle). Now it will be easier to install/remove and hold more securely since now the ends meet. And if you are really concerned about it flinging off you can run a little safety wire or a zip tie around it but I have never bothered.
