    Tank Dent fixing...

I was wondering if anyone had any tricks or methods on how to repair small to large dents on a tank. I just bought a dented tank and would like to repair it myself. I would like to fix the dent as best as possible with little to know Bondo.

    Thank you

it really can't be done easily sometype of filler. I believe dents will have to be pulled out, which means drilling into the dent and physically pulling the dent out. On a larger dent, that also means drilling multiple holes and pulling in multiple places. This will rough in the original shape of the tank and all the holes will have to be welded shut. Add the die grinder to clean up the welds and small imperfections of the pulling. Hi grit sanding to finish, but you're gonna have to use filler to get a clean, smooth finish.

I'd just leave the scar as is...
It's scary how slow I am!

Well, I work late nights at a car dealer and snuck into the body shop. Our dent guy has special tools that are just pieces of bent rod with rubber tips. I found one that reached my dent from the filler neck inserted it and pushed out my dent from the inside of the tank. It looked better, and I know our dent guy could have almost got it perfect, but I was bored and was gonna repaint the tank anyway. I used a finishing bondo to fill a couple 1mm deep voids, sanded, and painted it. Now its perfect. In conclusion if you can't find the tool take it to a paintless dent removal place and have them take care of it. Oh, and about drilling holes to pop dents, there is a stud welding gun that sells for like $100 to $175ish that just welds a stud to the outside of the metal, atatch a slide hammer, pop the dent, cut the rod, sand paint and be done. Hope this helps.
90 Hawk. What can I do to make it better?

i was going to say the same thing.

drilling holes for the slide hammer is old tech.... for the last decade or so, the way to do it is with a stud/wire weld gun.

          no holes that way.

I can tell you what NOT to do.

I got the bright idea to close the filler cap and shoot air into the petcock to pop out a couple dents. It was going good and the dents were starting to come out.... and then BANG!!!!! I popped the bottom of the tank out. I got a big hammer and beat it back in, but it still hits on the airbox a little.

                    Hey,

it sounds like a great new(ish) mod to increase the capacity! The Blown Tank Mod.

Seriously though, for anyone not running the stock airbox (nor Thorsten's intake), I think it's quite possibly an avenue to explore, expanding the stock tank downward. I recall some years ago Greg Dunn suggested trying to hammer the bottom of the tank out using panel beating tools to increase tank volume, but he ended up with a ritter style cut and shut in the end. If only he tried compressed air...

I have repaired 3-4 tanks with Bondo, mainly because I've never really cared too much about aesthetics or losing a little fuel capacity.Actually,I've taken the dead blow to the bottom of a couple tanks so that my pods would have a little more room to breathe

Regarding tank dents: my older brother had a totally full tank in his CBR and instead of taking it off to change the plugs, just turned it sideways and left the fuel line on.Of course he bumped it and it crashed down to the floor...

End result was the PERFECT imprint of the 12mm Craftsman wrench that it fell on.I thought it was cool enough to leave but to say he was a little angry is a bit of an understatement.

My the friend the classic car restore, welds brass rods all over the place and then pulls the dents out.
works great but needs a lot of skill.
