    taking forks apart

i started with a bent set of f2 forks with progressive springs & a stock set of hawkgt forks. my plan is to use the upper tube from the hawk forks and rebuild the f2 forks
the progressive springs in the bent forks look fine
but im stuck on a new problem
the bent forks dont have a red/orange bushing has pictured the first two are hard to see but they dont have these bushings

my problem is im not sure how to get the rest apart.
the manual doesnt say anything about this and the f2/progressive stuff wont fit with this in the way
what do i do from here???

You sure those are F2 forks? I thought F2 uppers were the same as the Hawk ones? SOmeone who knows for sure will be along in a minute.

        Seems strange.
I recently took apart my F3's and basically when you pull the stanchions out of the bottoms all the bushings etc came along too.
All I can suggest Jays is to go to Ron Ayers and look at the fiche of the F2 forks and compare to the Hawks and see if you can work out what that bit is.

turnes out i got f3 internals

and the fiche doesnt say anything about this stuff on the bottom of the upper slide tube, on all three models

maybe i could just drill it out and move on.

Can I ask, where did you get the bent forks, and who says they are F2/3? Just trying to clarify...

If they don't match the fiche, it's possible they are something else entirely? It's also possible that that bottom section is a fixed part of the stanchions, and won't show up on a fiche. Not really sure from your descriptions, but it sounds like you might have bent F3 forks there? If so, you'll need new F3 stanchions in order to use the internals. Just to be clear, these are the polished steel tubes, the sliders are the cast alloy sections. By internals I mean the damping cartridges, and any associated fittings, from inside of the stanchions.

You will want to search Milktree's site www.hawkworks.net , maybe on here and the ol hawklist for info on the compatability of F3/Hawk components. I think that you can drop F3 stanchions into Hawk sliders, but I'm pretty sure you cannot swap the internals. Also, if those are Progressive brand springs, Milktree says something about those maybe not being compatable from Hawk to CBR. I recall the stanchions are different lengths, therefore so are the springs.

Someone else who knows better will be along soon to correct me, I'm sure.

                thats what im thinking

                lil background
i bought the bike with the bent forks on it (he told me f2 with progressive springs)
a few years back i had a little fight with an suv bumper and the bumper won.
went and got a set of f2 forks from a salvage shop
noticed a big difference much softer like a pillow.

so i figured i would keep the bent ones for the after market springs.
lot of time goes by and i come across a set of stock hawkgt forks for almost free
so i figured i could use the hawk stuff and put my original forks back together and have a set of stock f2s and a set of f2s with progressive springs.

                well that was my plan

most likly going to take the stock ones apart tonight and see if i could use those and just make one complete set of forks to use.

since im here i might has well ask

what fork oil do you guys use???
