    Idling high while driving?

    Hey all,

As some of you know I picked up my hawk a couple days ago...Anyway yesterday I took it out for it's maiden voyage...I noticed something odd and wanted to see what you experts thought...When the bike is warming up it idles normal, around 1K rpms, but every now and then it "shudders", like a burp or something and the rpms drop and then come back up...It is very quick, almost like it goes in gear for a split second or something, but of course it is not in gear, just a "hicup"...

Second, when I was riding and it was up to temperature I noticed when I pull in the clutch the rpms stay high, around 3-4K and very very slowly will start to come down if I am stopped, but otherwise I have to let the clutch out to get them down...What's going on?

Any help on these to matters would be very appreciated! Thanks!

Sounds like you need a carb cleaning. But- when the revs stay up is the trottle rolling back? If not the cables may need some lube.

Thanks for the reply, yes the throttle snaps back, the bike sat for a year the lady said, who knows how long it actually did, and it has at least as that old gas that I am trying to run out...So I am sure they could use a cleaning...Can I just run something through the gas tank, like techron additive or something without having to take it off and spray directly into carbs? What is the best to use if I can? And any thoughts on the hicup at idle?...Thanks again,

sounds like one cylinder is firing intermittantly, maybe a plug, maybe clogged carb........adjust idle screw on carb to set idle speed.

Whenever you purchase a used motorcycle, especially one that you know sat for a year you must!! expect to:

          -disassemble carbs and clean/replace jets

          -drain and replace old fuel

          -change fuel filter

          -replace spark plugs

-Inspect air cleaner and replace if necessary

          -inspect and adjust valves

          -synchronize carbs

-inspect plug wires and test for spark

          -change oil and filter

-lube all cables (dont forget to lube choke cable)

idle speed for the hawk is 1200 rpm not 1000

Thanks for the replies, I am thiniking you are right on with the intermitant firing, I am running the gas out of this and going to fill with fresh asap...I figure there is not a need to drain it as it is burning up ok...I am picking up fresh oil and filters tomorrow, and need to get a chain and sprocket kit I guess...What about the tranny oil and filter? And the fuel filters, how hard are they to get to, should I replace them?

You should probably get a service manual first......and study it for a couple of weeks before tackling anything. there is no tranny oil in a hawk just engine oil. The gas you think is burning is bad(its called varnish at this point and it can cause all kinds of nightmares in your carb and maybr fuel pump) drain it no joke drain it ... you should learn and read as much about motorcycle maintenance or youll have a hawk that youll be taking to the mechanic cuase its not running and it will cost you more because of poor owner maintenance.

Im 35 and I started learning about motorcycle mechanics when I was 19(too bad it wasnt sooner but I wasnt allowed...parents...)so Im speaking from a lot of costly mistakes on previous bikes. Read Read read

Would gas go bad after standing for just 4 months or would that be still ok to use?

Ok, I'll drain it today, do you just remove the line to the petcock?

Get a length of hose that is the same diameter as the fuel line hose, disconnect at the petcock after turning it off, attach the new hose to the petcock, put the other end in a container and turn on the petcock to reserve. If you can, use a clear container. That way you can see if there is rust and dirt in the gas. If rust is present you should seal the tank.
Then you could mix some carb cleaner into your next fill up and it may help out your idle issues.

My bike sat for a couple of years before I bought it and got it back on the road. Doc helped me clean out the carbs but after that it still ran rough - it could be that there was some gunk in the tank. I just kept running it, putting up with the occasional stall, etc, and now after 1500 miles it doesn't stumble anymore. It does still idle a bit high, about 1500 rpm, and when I come to a slightly sudden stop it revs up- like more gas is flowing into it. I'm thinking it still needs some cleaning but i'll get to it this winter when I replace a couple things and rejet the carbs.

getting the carbs out is not as hard as it seems. You disconnect the gas line and remove the tank, take the cables off the carbs, loosen the clamps and then pull straight up (a hard pull may be required).

Also I agree, get the manual. There is one on ebay now, or you can pay more and get one here http://store.azmusa.com/nthosema19.html

Or you could download the electronic version available in the sticky topic in this forum. If you work in an office or know anyone that does maybe you could get a copy printed off and get it bound with one of those spiral ring binders just like the real thing.
