    1989 Hawk With NO SPARK....HELP!!!!!!!

This is driving me nuts....I have an 89 hawk that has been in a garage for 15 years...not started in 15 years as well. The bike was layed down with only 90 miles on it and has not been ridden since. The guy i bought it from said that it ran right after the accident, but hasnt tried it after that. Now i am left with the problem of having no spark to any of the 4 plugs, and i have tested what i think to be all of the ohm readings in the manual...all seeming to be within range...does anyone have any thoughts? Is this a common problem? The kill switch is in the run position, are there more safety switches somewhere or anything?

    This could be fun.

So, first off, after 15 years you put a new battery in it right? So you have other working ancillary electrics; lights, horn etc?

You've checked the fuse box? Ignition switch?

You can probably rule out a lot of the other electrics; coils, leads, caps for tye moment as they're awfully unlikely to ALL go at the same time, you'd surely get spark from somewhere. Could be wiring, battery earth, IC igniter, off the top off my head, those would probably give the same totally dead symptoms ...

Degumming the carbs after 5 years might be interesting.

I would also check the main fuses, but that is if nothing is working...When I recked my superhawk I couldn't figure out when nothing worked, evetually I found the fuse and presto everything came on...
Damn right it's a Hawk GT

        hmmm...

The IC Ignitor huh? Where is that on the bike and what does it do? Is that possibly the ignition box on the right hand side of the bike?

Do you have to hold the clutch in on the 89? I don't on my 88...

First does it crank? I assume that it does so...

Did you by any chance remove the kickstand and or the kickstand safety switch? If not is it possible that the switch was damaged in the accident?

Did you remove any other items from the wiring harness?

Are you converting this into a race bike or is to remain a streetbike?

            More information please.

Does the Hawk have this? Pretty sure my Bros doesn't ...

The bike is to stay as a street bike, and yes the side stand was removed after the accident...as far as the switch, I didnt know there was one. The only parts of the wiring harness removed have been the left handlebar switches which consist of the headlight, turn sig, and horn...they were all broken in the wreck. Other than that the bike is 100% stock.

POssibly called pulse generator on the Hawk. Thinking about it though, there's two of them so fairly unlikely for both to go. Could still be the CDI but there's simpler and cheaper things to check first ...

Hawks dont have a sidestand switch.
Ive actually been able to start the bike witout the clutch pulled in, so I'm not sure what the clutch switch is meant to do.
Sounds like a fuse or main power to the ignition circuit problem.

What would I know about side stand switches. I have never owned a Hawk that even had the side stand until a few months ago never mind a complete wiring harness AND streetbike. All my collection came home in boxes. -C

Mine has a switch built into the clutch lever that doesn't seem to do anything- but if either of the two wires are disconnected there is no power to the starter.

I was messin around all day again today and i think i may have found the problem. After memorizing the wiring schematic....i found out that the coils are wired through the fuel pump relay unit, and that relay doesnt seem to be working which is definetly a possibility after sitting for 15 yrs it could be frozen...ill order a new one tomorrow with my fingers crossed.

hate to burst your bubble, but its the other way around...
the pump is run off the coils.. the coils arnt run off the pump.
you can unplug the pump stuff, and the bike still runs.. (well it runs assuming it can still get fuel.)

since your fuel pump relay is fully electronic, there's nothing to get "stuck," and you really don't need another relay anyway.........if yours craps out (not very likely) just run a jumper wire between the blue/black wire and one other wire up there.........
