I just got a 1988 Hawk, and the front tire was in need of balancing. I removed it and took it to the shop to get that done. I noted that one of the pinch bolts on each side did not turn freely, but figured a little liquid magic would free it up. Put a few drops of Kroil in the hole and went off with the wheel.
After work when I remounted the wheel I managed to break BOTH of the bolts, one on each side. But wait - it does get worse. I drilled out one side, cleaned it up and re-tapped the threads. On the other side, I broke off the tap in the fork leg.
So, after 30 years wrenching on old European bikes, and not an easy-out in the tool kit, my first week on this nice modern bike resulted in destruction.
Since I see a lot of folks talking about fork upgrades, does anyone have a stock right fork slider for sale? Opinions on riding (commuting to work, not track days) with only one bolt on the right side?
Any advise on not continuing this pattern of destructive behavior (besides taking it easy on the bolts?) I accept laughter well, I laugh at myself often and others often!
