  • A few questions from a new owner

I've been checking out some options for bar end mirrors... anyone have a suggestion? What size tubes does the hawk have? A lot of the aftermarket mirrors I'm checking out fit 7/8"... will that work?

The previous owner said he rarely turned the petcock to "off" during the season. My last bike (74' CB450) had me in the habit of turning it to "off" or "on" every ride. Do I need to do the same with my 88' Hawk?

    thanks.

Petcock should be turned to "off" to prevent gas from seeping into the enginey-bits while sitting.

Everything but Hardley Dangerouses have 7/8 bars and yes, Hawks do too. H-D uses 1-inch bars, and they're never clip-ons (when stock, anyway. I saw a custom Sporty with them once). And, allow me to give my passionate endorsement for CRG (Constructors Racing Group) Blindsight (which I run on my Hawk) and Hindsight LS. They are, as they say across the pond, the mutt's nuts. Took me a couple rides to adjust them right & get used to the little "duck & twist" necessary to get a good view, but they look f*kkin' killer, and give a surprisingly complete view. I compare it to having a rear-view mirror, not just right-lane, left-lane. No blind spots - at all - once you get used to the bar-end position.

Ya I have bar ends. My only complaint is cuz they stick out so far people are always bumping them as they walk by in the parking lot or my crowded garage. So almost everytime I get on I have to adjust them. Other than that I see much better than stock and they look sharp too.

If you're in the habit of turning it off, fine. I've owned my Hawk for 17 years and reallly have never turned the petcock off.

Your CB had a gravity fed fuel line, the Hawk has a fuel pump.

With that said, Doug is probably right. It can't hurt to turn it off. It MIGHT hurt if ya don't?

I'd never go with bar-ends because I ride my Hawk in the city. Lots of times, I'm squeezing though openings with inches to spare... I don't want the extra width.
