    Fork dismantle

I've just started to dismantle the forks on my Bros 650, following the excellent tutorial from the sticky section.

My problem is that I've come to undo the damper rod holing bolt at the bottom of the forks and it turns no problem, but so does the dampening rod inside the forks. Am I missing something or is there some trick to doing this?

Also, whilst I'm on, is it worth welding up holes in the dampening rod for normal street riding? I was going to use 15w oil when I rebuild to increase dampening, will this be enough?

Remove the allen bolt holding the damping rod in the bottom of the lower fork tube. If the damping rod spins inside the fork, preventing its removal, try the time honored method of inserting a wooden broom handle or dowel to hold the damper rod in place.

Temporarily re-insert the spring and spacer and cap, which should hold down the rod in place. It also allows you to use both hands instead of using one to hold a broom handle, or needing a helper.

I wouldn't bother. I have progressive springs, no welding on the rods and the normal amount of 10wt oil in the forks. It's fine for street use, tho' the springs made a BIG difference.

          Many thanks all.

Shoving a dowel rod in there did the trick and thanks for the advice on oil, springs and holes.

Now having the fork apart looks like I need to replace the bushes and give the stanchons a good clean. Looks like the last person in there mada a bit of a hash of it.
