    Bros

    A question for BROS owners:-
A friend of mine just bought a Bros 650 (product one) and its in need of some TLC, so he asked me to have a look at it.

First thing I notice is its got Hawk clipons, ok maybe previous owner changed riding postion. Then I look at the front wheel and it looks like a Hawk wheel as the rotor has same bolt pattern and not floating, but the fork lowers are definitly BROS. Could this be an NTV wheel and disc or did the BROS ever come with a solid disc (like Hawk).???

Yes the front disc(rotor) sure looks like its from an NTV. (Anyone know what diameter the NTV disc is)?

We just pulled the tank as it was running a bit rough and the tank is full of
brown rust. Took off the petcock and there is NO filter in the tank!!!!
This is going to be a long slog but we are going to get another BROS back on the road.

JR did you see my post about getting rust out of motorcycle tanks?

I searched all over for various ways to de-rust the interior of motorcycle tanks and pretty much all of them are sub optimal. I accidentally stumbled upon this method which IMHO is by far the best way to do it from what I have seen first hand.

Didnt we look into this? Thers no way you can fit a hawk disc to bros legs as the caliper mounting bracket is completly different. Hawks have much smaller discs that the floating bros disc.

              Alex,
Hawk and Bros front wheels have different stud patter for the disc(rotor).
The Hawk has a 316mm rotor and the Bros has 320mm.
The Caliper and mounting are Bros so I think a Hawk wheel and rotor will bolt onto the forks but the pads may not cover all the disc. Therefore a Bros wheel and rotor into a Hawk shouldn't work as the rotor is bigger and should foul the caliper.
I still think its an NTV wheel and disc, which I think is 316mm I need to confirm this and therefore I'll take some pictures to see if the pads are covering the whole disc.

I found this product called "Evapo-Rust" that works unbelievable miracles on rust. It's just a liquid that you soak parts in. It's not going to remove pitting but it'll take every last bit of rust off of anything that you soak in it overnight. If you filled the tank up with a bit of this and turned it over a few times - over a few days time it'd probably be clean. It's not an acid and it isn't supposed to do any damage to good metal. I will say though that if it dries out it turns into a gooey mess that you can barely remove.

Evapo-Rust Super Safe Rust Remover is easy to use, environmentally safe product that removes rust in minutes, without scrubbing.

                    hmmmm, thats a hawk disc.

I rekon he dosent know what it is, given a bunch of "bros" parts when really they are hawk bits.

                        1) Well he said it has a 316mm front rotor, that makes it a Hawk..... Yes/No?
And just to throw a spanner in the works why does the online Hawk service manual on page 165 and also the Hawk GT partsfishe http://hawkworks.net/hawkfiche/front_wheel.html show a Bros wheel?

                        2) The eccentric bearing carrier has a couple of teeth missing (Bo!!ocks)
but the disc guard plate is held on by a huge snap ring. When we remove the snap ring the disc guard plate refuses to come off the carrier.
This means we cannot adjust the chain. Any ideas how to remove this plate, heat/hammer etc?

                          will it ever end....

                          ... to clarify....

i wasn't "given a bunch of bros parts" this wheel was from the my old bike... a honda bros 400 (nc25) and i replaced the front end with a cbr600...hence my spare parts....

when i bought the bike ... i was not aware of any mods to the front end...

i want to clear this up for a genuine ebay sale.... i don't want someone recieving the wrong wheel..... and being disapointed...

to answer JR's ebay q... the caliper is a 2pot.... does this help to clarify what wheel it is?

                          cheers' viva

                            hi,

is the front end (forks, yolks etc) of the bros and hawk interchangable?

                            thanks viva'

Yes the bikes are virtually identical and almost all parts interchangable. But there are slight differences Front wheel, fork lowers,Front caliper 4 pot on the Bros with floating 320mm disc, 2 pot on the Hawk with solid 316mm disc, Close ratio g/box on the Bros.
Hawk had high raised handlebars and the Bros lower clip ons.
Some later Bros's had an 18" rear wheel

The bottom lug where the caliper bolts on is the one of the differences for both bikes
Here is a picture of a BROS front end (this one has a Brembo caliper), notice very large lower lug.

And here is a Hawk front end (with CBR F2 wheel but with modified bracket to accept a 6 pot)
the lower fork lug is almost the same as the top lug

Any other BROS owners reading can they confirm if the BROS came with a soilid disc and 2 pot caliper (like Hawk)
