    Rear Wheel Trouble

so for a while now I've had some problems with my rear wheel loosening up (even with a cotterpin in!) and today upon inspection i believe the problem may be that the drive pin holes on my wheel are worn or something. I just got replacing the chain and sprockets and everything was honkie dorie, then last night when i was inspecting my bike i noticed there was a little bit of wobble in rear wheel. And sure as shit the nut was turning a bit with the cotter pin in it even!

So I took the wheel off and I looked at the drive pin holes and they look even worse then the last time I put them on (they've looked like this for a while) and the drive pins even look a little warped.

is that what they're supposed to look like? Because that's how they've been since i got the bike. I'm assuming that it's not... what can i do about this? Can those be replaced or am i looking at getting a new rear tire. Any quick fixes you guys can think of? I just dropped $300 on this guy for chain and sprockets and a new tire, I'm a college kid who can't keep spending like this!

Also I noticed when i was looking at a diagram that there's supposed to be a washer between the nut and the collar for the wheel, mine is missing, could this be playing a role in my problems? (anybody got what size that is?)

AND FINALLY, is there supposed to be a bit of play in the axle? it dosn't turn but it moves up and down a bit, but I don't imagine this is much of a problem when it's torqued to the wheel

You are going to need to spend some money. Not a lot of money but money. You should replace that rear wheel, not a big deal since used rear wheels go for @ $50 on ebay. You are going to need new drive pins since yours look worn, while your at the dealer for the pins pick up that washer that is missing from between the coller on your rear spindle and the nut. Finally some good news... the rear spindle is supposed to rock around as it is only held in place by the coller and nut on the right side of the wheel. I don't think the spindle nut is loosing up so much as the rim is wearing away from the constant movement between it and the hub also with the spindle wiggling around it's being set deeper into the splines on the hub by your rim problem. Your worries will be over when you repace your rim and drive pins unfortunatley you will need to remount you rear tire.

I probably have all the parts you need and would be willing to make a package deal. Send me a PM with what you have to spend and we'll talk. I'm just in No. Cal so shipping shouldn't be to damaging.

im woundering what caused this in the first place???

i think it would be a good idea to change or atleast inspect the cush drive rubbers. if they are old and hard or shrivled up the cost will be another $25.in my opinion its worth it, exspecialy if thats what caused your problem.

keep us posted i would like to know if my hunch is right?

i wish i didnt loose my pins, let me look i might be able to send you a set

i actually just replaced the cush drive rubbers a few months ago thinking that was the problem. I replaced those because the cotter pin that was on the wheel when i bought it snapped and that probably is what funked up the rear wheel. I replaced those and snugged everything down and figured I was all good, then I blew the rear tire, got that all replaced and replaced the chain and sprocket and everything was great till riding last night just didn't feel quite right and I put my bike on the centerstand and CRAP!

hopefully after this everything will be perfect!

Somewhere along the way that bike did big miles with the rear wheel loose.

The Cush drive has nothing to do with the wear he is experiencing on the rear rim/drive pins. Hawks have done many hard race miles with the cush drives completely removed without damage to stock or aftermarket wheels.
