    Safest Front Fender Installation........

Well ive just finished painting my '89 Hawk,...and will have some stunning pics up pretty soon... but ive noticed that the stock front fender fits pretty snug when trying to pop it in there, and i really dont want to scuff up the clear coat, plus i cannot flex the fender too much because of fear of cracking the paint. Is it any easier to remove the front wheel and put the fender in from the bottom? HELP!

I had the same problem with my freshly painted fender, only mine is not stock. I had to remove the wheel and pull one of the fork legs to get mine in without any scratches... my fender is an odd fit though.

You should only need to remove the wheel on yours.

When I polished my forks I found it easier to put the fender on with one of the fork legs off- attach the fender to the leg still attached, then slide the other up into the triple tree past the fender.

Yeah, don't try to wedge it in there - it can be done, but you'll scratch it up badly. Don't do it if you like your paint.

I took my front wheel off, yeah.

just dont mix up the spacers and make sure everything is tourqued down when it goes back together

Best way is to remove the front wheel. The metal bracket on the under side of the fender really hinders you from just sliding it on. You will F-up that nice paint job if u try to force it through the forks.

I removed the front wheel then turned the fork lowers 90 degrees, so the axle holes were point front to back. Then slid the fender half way up, and turned the lowers back to normal, then slid the fender the rest of the way up and bolted it on. No scratches!

Will the fork lowers spin freely when the wheel is off?

-Yup. Only the axle keeps them pointing forward, and together.
