    Fuel Pump Relay

I think my fuel pump relay is shot. First - Iv'e heard that there are some alternative systems. Can anyone recommend one. Second - if there isn't something superior to stock does anyone have a fuel pump relay they'd be willing to sell?

    Thanks,
    Jason

    did you test it?

i was having problems with my fuel system before i took it off the road. i started with the pump and then the relay and now i HOPE its dirty carbs. but never opened them up before, im procrastinating on that job.

I Had problems with mine in the past also. I made my own wiring harness for the Gulf Hawk and I just used a standard relay for it... I still have a stock one if you need it.

As far as testing goes - I don't really have any idea how to test the relay itself but I did yank the relay and jump the connectors and the pump ran/pumped like crazy. It just doesn't when the relay is connected. I heard that some people are using a setup from an sv650. What's up with that? Any better than stock?

          Jason,

I just sent you a PM. Also, in the book, there is a small section on how to check the relay... if I recall correctly anyway.

i remember something too. thats why i mentioned it.

and the relay turns the pump on only when the bike needs fuel. so its not going to be on all the time. wich could possably be the reason why you think the relay is bad. well thats what i thought for a wile with my bike atleast.

              FPR Testing

Fuel Pump Relay testing info is located on page 18-8 of the manual (or page 257 in the latest version of the PDF file I believe), available via the top thread in this section of the site.

Note that the manual indicates that there is also a 10A sub-fuse in the circuit that should be checked.

i think having the SV650 fuel pump on my bike is one of my favorite mods....

...except i keep forgetting i did it.
unlike the stock setup, its small, its simple, and it always works.

because of this, i keep forgetting i did it... id reccomend the SV650 pump to everyone.. it works great.

I have a mech pump off an xj600 that I've been meaning to fit for ages.

MrDude - does the SV one cope well with the lag when you switch to reserve?

the line comes from the tank to the pump inlet.. then from the pump to the stock "T" that was mounted on the carbs. there it splits to the two carbs.
the "power" for mine comes from the vacuum port for the front intake runner.

heres some pics of it setup:

that last pic gives you an idea of how small it really is..

in the last pic, the line on the left is going back to the tank.
the line on the right, is going down to the carbs.

the line you cant see, is just arced straight down and connected to the head/intake port.

all of it is out of the way, and simple... when it comes time to remove the carbs, i cut the two zip ties that hold the pump, and off comes the whole fuel system. easy, light, cheap, and reliable.

                          yes.

while i can "feel" its going to run out of fuel and i need ot kick it to reserve, most of the time i still let it run out before i flip it.

the engine only needs to turn over a few times before the carb bowls are totally full.. if im cruising along and it happens, id say theres about a 2 second lag between when i flip the petcock, to when the power is totally back on..

if the engine is stopped and the bowls are dead empty and you only have reserve.. theres about 4 seconds or so of cranking with the starter button for it to fire.
if the fuel level is not on reserve, it fills the carbs when you open the petcock, no pumping required.

btw, that behavior is almost identical to what the stock pump does.
the stock pump "pulses" a pump whenever one coil fires.

the SV pump "pulses" a pump whenever it gets a vacuum signal pulse from the intake.

so behavior wise not much different.....

Ta, may get on and do it then.

I also wondered about how hot the pump might get as all the obvious places to mount it put it rather close to the motor (if you're attempting to lose clutter from the rear end anyway) - guess that's ok too?

I'm retaining the airbox on my bike so I guess there's not enough room to mount it over the front pot like yours. My best thought so far was to zip-tie in to the inside of the lhs frame rail.
