    Clutch rant....yes rant..

Well let me warn you before you read too far this is a rant through and through. As you all know I have a great NT400 that I bought in Aug. I think the bike is great and I have really enjoyed riding the wee beastie. Well after riding the bike for a few weeks I noticed the clutch was slipping a bit. Not a big deal... I'll just get a clutch kit from wemoto.com and fix it all up. So I go out and buy all the bits from wemoto and think all is great... well I get all the parts in a couple of weeks which is pretty good for my part of the world and I split the bike apart and get started. I make note of all the parts as I take them off so as not to cock things up when I go to put things together. All the bits look right everything is going together great but one surprise is the clutch cable is on it's last thread. I've been lucky to not have it snap while I've been riding. So I email JD at Hord and sure enough he has a stock length cable no problem, I get it ordered in. (JD rocks by the way!! Buy all your Hawk stuff from him! you cannot go wrong!). So I go back to the shop to start putting things back together and I get to the dust seal on the clutch actuator lever. Well as it turns out that is a 18x12x5 seal. Wemoto sent me a 20x12x5 seal..... Of course I never got out the Micrometer and checked the dimensions of the old seal before I cocked it up so bad that it couldn't be used again. So as a result I royally cocked up the new seal trying to make a 20 mm seal fit where a 18mm seal should go.Thankfully the folks at wemoto stand behind what they sell and after realizing that they sent the wrong seal they sent me a new one that was the right size...arriving 2 weeks later. Well I got that 2 days ago. I was working so I didn't have time to finish the job. Well today I did. So after I put all the new clutch plates and spacers in and torqued everything down right and put the new gasket in and added all the new Mobil1 oil and fought with the exauhst to get it back on I got it all buttoned up and went to go adjust the clutch and nothing...............the Bike fired up and went into gear and nothing............ okay what the [email protected]#K have I done wrong??????? WELL after I took everything apart again and [email protected] up the case gasket so it won't hold oil and I find out that the clutch spacers that wemoto sent me were way too thin.... like, I take the old ones and stack them up and place the new ones beside them and it's like I'm missing 2 of the old ones!!!!!....... well okay one mistake( the dust seal) is a "oh shit sorry" but 2 in the same order is a "you don't know what the [email protected] your doing" situation that has cost me a month of the best riding weather we have had in Southern Ontario for as long as I've been around........ So tonight instead of being sober and riding my bike around and enjoying this great unseasonal riding weather I'm sitting here drinking pints getting pissed off looking at my bike longingly wishing it wasen't pissing oil all over the place and I was able to enjoy this great riding weather .... Well thankfully JD has a gasket and I ordered that tonight and thankfully I didn't throw out the old spacers so they are in the bike and it seems to grab the way it should, but I have lost another week, at least, of great unseasonal riding all because someone couldn't fill out an order right. Teach your kids attention to detail so old bastards like myself don't have to go mad wasting all the few good days left to us not riding wondering WTF is so hard about filling an order properly. WTF WTF WTF????????...... Sorry if this was too much of a rant but [email protected] I'm pissed off..........

What's a clutch spacer? Clutch plate?

Why didn't you source parts more locally? Aren't Hawk and NT4 clutch parts the same?

Yeah sorry about my use of weird terminology (aka wrong) but here' s the thing. The clutch outer and center are the same on the nt400 and 650 but the disks and plates (aka my spacers=plates) are different. The 400 has only 5 b style disks 1 a style disk and 5 plates. The 650 has 7 b style disks 1 a style disk and 7 plates I believe if I am counting them right from the pic in the manual. The difference lies in the thickness of the plates. The plates for the 650 are much thinner.

As for sourcing parts locally.... Honda Canada is not interested in bikes over 10 years old. They want you to buy a new bike. I have heard from people in the know that after a certain amount of years Honda Canada landfills parts to make room for parts for newer bikes. They won't, as in they refuse to, sell them to old parts suppliers, they through them out. That's why it takes so long to get old parts in Canada from Honda because they don't keep any in Canada. I can get parts quicker from wemoto or Hord and I get much better customer service from them. Plus I say NT400 at my Honda dealer and he gets this blank look on his face like I started talking in Russian or something. They even have to brush the dust off the 650gt fiche once I explain what the bike is. I love old Honda's I just wish Honda did.

Yep I know that look well, Your Canadian dealers must train their New Zealand counter parts in that look.

I like to make them earn their money I give them the frame and engine number and tell them its a NC25 J model then play dumb after that.

Then I give a them little something I tell them its a sleeved down version of the NT650 Bros. Then give them the web address of one of the online parts fiche.

You can only do this once after that they remember both the bike and you.

That would be great. More info is always better. And after looking through the parts fiche I have to say in wemoto's defence there are 2 different dust seals for the clutch actuator. Ones 18mm for the NT400L and the other is 20mm for the NT400J and NT400K. I did order the right one but I can see where the mistake could easily be made. The clutch plates on the other hand... Just on a side note, maybe NT400(Spiro) would know. The engine number on your bike, is it NC25E or something else? The # should be on the rear head on the right side. I'm wondering if I have a replacement motor in my bike and not the original. The motor is fine I'm just curious .

Cool, thanks Kiwi. Is your 400 a mkI or a mkII? I think they are all NC25E's but I thought there might be a difference between the mkI and mkII. Maybe not.
