Hoping not to sound too stupid here

A little stupid is ok -

If you're installing a factory jet kit - in this case stage 3, is there any reason to "rebuild" your carbs? Isn't that, in fact, basically what you're doing with the exception of the float bowl gaskets?

If youre doing a stage 3 Im going to assume you have a very free flowing pipe......hotter plugs......Pod filters.... and possibly hotter coils? If your hawk is not rebuilt(I.E. bigger pistons, machined larger valves....etc.) stage three might be too much....but to answer you question no there isnt anything to rebuild except drilling out your pilot screw adjustment cover so you can set it to the larger jet size. this procedure shoud be in the jet kits instructions

Hotter plugs? Don't you mean colder plugs?

Not a stupid question at all. When installing a jet kit I would check these things:

            1) Make sure carb slide diaphragms are not torn or brittle
            2) Replace intake manifolds if they are original
            3) Replace bowl gaskets (o-rings)
            4) Disassemble and clean air cutoff diaphragms
            5) Clean pilot jets (use the original 42's in most cases)
            6) Remove and clean float valves
            7) Remove and clean filters under float valve seats
            8 ) Check float height (9mm)
            9) Replace fuel filter
            10) Make sure enrichener circuit is clean and plungers move freely.

If all that stuff is in good shape, then your "re-jetting experience" will be a lot more soothing! BTW the 3.0 kit/pods work just dandy with a stock engine and good exhaust.

                Thanks JD,
I do have a TBR exhaust, unipods, etc.
by pure serendipity I just picked up a TBR ignition advancer. I also happen to have a stage 1 kit and two sets up carbs so if I F$#% one up I still have a stock set to work with. I guess I should break them apart - I mean gently open them up - and see if I actually need to purchase two rebuild kits as well.
