    ID-ing honda brake pads

mmk, i just changed pads on the hawk (with RC51 brakes)

the old pads were really linear and progressive... a 'soft' bike that was directly related to lever pressure.

i just swapped them for what i THOUGHT were the same honda pads. part number 06455-mbw-e11 ....

the new pads have a really aggressive bite... they're linear after that, but the inital bite is hard.. hard enough to make stoppies substancually easier.

    two questions..
one, my old brake pads had these numbers stamped on the back:

    Y __________ 31
    TOYOS20AHH

and on the other two pads:

    0Y __________ 26
    TOYOS20AHH

what pads are these? same ones? whats the honda number for them?

    second question...

now i just bedded the pads in earlier today, and only stopped hard just now on the way back...
do you think this initial bite will "wear off" after more riding? right now, its a pretty good bite, but after that, its nice and progressive...
really, its only noticeable when doing fast stops...

could be a slightly different compound or it could be the new brake setup you have. when i did the lenac kit on my street hawk, they seemed more grabby, but in reality i just had to adjust my braking pressure on the lever compared to the stock setup.

p.s. you shouldn't be doing stoppies, thats irresponsible, heh.

They are both a dual H compound. Your old pads might have had a contamination of some sort on them making them feel a bit more progressive then the new ones. Wait till the new pads FULLY bed in before making any judgements. They might smooth out after a few hundred miles or get even grippier!!! That happened to me a few months ago when replacing the stock Honda HH pads with a EBC HH pad. Thier initial "bite" worsened as the pads bedded in!

And don't mention the words stoppie or wheelie. Someone is bound to flame you for it

so they are the same compound? cool....
hopefully they smooth out a bit.
when stopping around town, i need significantly less brake pressure then before... and my old pads still had over half their life left.
i really hope they smooth out, because right now, a panic stop can easily become a one wheel balancing act by accident.... lol.

How many fingers are you using to modulate your lever?

never more then two.. sometimes one.
also, i usually have the lever really close to the pivot....

lol, i didnt mean to imply that im just going to grab on the lever and flip or anything... just that its far too easy to hoist the rear a bit off the ground (inches) because of that inital grab...
with the old pads in there (same brakes otherwise), it took an intentional effort to lift the rear. (and more lever movement)

could just be the difference of the old pads vs the new. you didn't bleed the brakes as well did you?

yes i did, however i also change the fluid everytime it starts to get darker... the previous pads had the fluid changed twice also... and i know there wasnt any air in there if thats what you're thinking.. lol.

one of the things i love about clear reservoirs.. its an easy reminder to change the brake fluid.

(noone tell GTfever i brake hard enough on the street to change my fluid that often.. shhhhh!! )
