How do I remove this? (top of fork)

How do I remove it from the rod and other internals?:

Also do I have to remove it for reassembly??? I mean it seems easier to me to just keep it all one connected assembly as it is now in the pic below, and compress the fork tube and let it just hang out when filling with fluid, then just compress it down and screw it on the top of the tube, am I missing something:

Damn right it's a Hawk GT

Grab it with your teeth and pull

Thanks for the tip I figured out I just needed to unscrew it from the preload adjuster, so it is off...On to my next question:

At the bottom of the damper rod, what the rod bolt screws into, I noticed that if I pull or push on the bolt it moves a piston type valve all the way at the bottom of the rod, can someone give me some info on this? Is it a shuttle valve to direct fluid depending on if the fork is compressing or rebounding? In the small picture below this "valve" sits all the way to the right in the rod end, circled in red...I may have my terminology mixed up, is this valve actually in the end of the "piston"?

i don't think you have a stock front end there. hawk didn't come with preload adjuster. did the guy before you put different internals in. It sounds like you might have a cartridge fork there. I'm sure someone with a little more knowledge can help. good luck

The part that the bolt screws into is the compression valve, the rebound valve is placed at the end of the rod inside the cartridge.

Please check the description of a similar fork here and pay close attention to correct assembly - you need to set the rebound needle at the correct height among other things:

You really should take everything apart and clean it, but it is a little involved to remove/reassemble the rebound valve.

With stock shims and needles do not go too light on oil viscosity - you could try something like 25 - 30 cSt (40 C) or heavier, depending on how you like the feel, ambient temperature... Remember air volume over oil is an important tuning factor. So is spring - do you want to use the stock Hawk, the stock CBR or go to a linear spring and which rate?

Read also milktree's experiences with similar forks, but a different set-up regarding shimming.

And you could read/search the Traxxion forum and the Independent Bike Suspension Forum for more suspension related info.
