Does this sound like the fuel pump relay?

So I finally have my carbs rebuilt ... for the second time. Everything is all connected up. I have run the starter enough to kill the battery 3 times. No gas in the bowls yet. Gas is on, run switch is on etc. I am wondering if the fuel pump relay is flaking out. It has worked at least sortof a few times, but the bike has not run for long due to a million other things I screwed up. What I do know is the fuel pump runs like a champ when the relay is shorted like the manual has you do it. Both coils are "hot" I think the front coil triggers the relay. I have not checked the continuity of the wire from the front coil to the relay yet, but will today. If the wire is ok does this seem like a bad relay?

could be just the coil, mine was fried too (along with the regulator, battery, fuel pump, fuel relay, clutch diode, starter relais, but that was because of the faulthy regulator was said to me)

The coil did test out ok recently according to the tests in the manual and I did get spark from it, so I am thinking the relay is the culprit. Just tested continuity on the wire that runs between the relay and coil and it is ok too.

just bypass the relay by connecting the black and black/blue wires with a jumper wire just where they plug into relay..........that way no more drained batterys, with less concern for those occasions when you run out of gas and have to crank alot to get fresh fuel to carbs.

i did this mod after the first time i ran out of gas and almost killed battery trying to restart.

Ah. I think this is the same thing I have done from the manual to test the fuel pump, although I do it when the fuel line is disconnected from the carbs so when the ignition is on the pump runs constantly. I guess the pump will stop when it gets a little resistance from the closed floats? Is there any concern about tweaking the pump if there is no relay? This is cool if it works though, means I can crank her this weekend. Rock on.

no known problems doing this........relay is some sort of "safety" thing, and who among us believes stongly in that or we'd all be in cars instead!!

I had this same issue. I bypassed the relay as sqrlmn said just to fill the bowls. Once I was able top get it started I hooked the relay back up and it worked fine.

Yeah, the relay is there so that if you crash and the ignition is on, but the engine isn't running (bikes will often stall for one reason or another in a crash), the pump won't continue to squirt a flammable liquid. It's up to you if you want to disable it with a jumper wire

Ah that makes it perfectly clear. I was trying to add up the purpose of the relay. My plan is to start it shorted to make sure it is the issue. Then order a new relay from Hord. I am certainly the guy that would douse himself in gas after I drop it in the driveway or whatever. Thanks guys.

if you dont want to pay the ridiculous amount that honda wants for a new one of those relays like i did, i could always send you mine(brand new) and you could see if it worked and then decide if you wanted to give me anything for it...? I just have it lying around and im getting tired of looking at it.

ITS ALIVE!!! rock on. Shorted the relay and turned the ignition off waited for the pump to stop. Then cranked it turned over like a champ. Didn't ride it but seems to be running much better than after the first carb "rebuild". I put the relay back in a ran it for a while and heard the pump clicking. Thanks jaybird! I am psyched. Now on to the other stuff, clutch, fork rebuild....

jregezeino - Thanks for the offer man. I appreciate it. At least from this short test mine seems to be working, just didn't have enough to prime the hoses/bowls I guess? But I will run it more tomorrow if I have problems. I will definitely PM you.

Well I was almost right . The relay is bad, I ran it longer this morning and when the bowls emptied the pump wasn't switching on enough.... so I *do* need a relay.

jregezeino - I PMed you on yours.

Awesome Kip! As soon as my next Hord shipment gets here, I estimate a week if I bust my ass after work and I'll be back on the road. Michaels is a place to meet up on Sundays, lots of bikes and not all hardleys. The Hawk got a look or two the first time I was there. There's not too bad riding if you head north.
