    one for the spray painters!

ive been watching a lot of american shows lately about restoring old cars (over-hauling)etc? and the obliquitory orange county chopper gang! but one thing ive noticed is when the guys are laying on the coats of paint they dont wear air fed masks, just plain old resporators! or on quite a few times nothing at all!
over here in the uk we use a lot of paints containing isocyanates and you really cant use these things without a proffesional spray booth or youll end up very dead! so my question is! is there anyone on here from the states who paints proffesionally and if so what paints do you use, because the results them guys are getting are very impressive and for me to spray in the garage and not have to go borrow my mates spray booth would be so much more convienient!

    cheers

I have painted for a few years and I didn't have to use a fresh air supply mask unless I was spraying clear. I used PPG products and the only products that had ISO's were things like clears and certain primers. I believe it is the catalyst in the products that contain ISO's. We generaly just used regular respirators, we never sprayed without a mask of course. When I see the guys from the shows spraying without a mask it was mostly using a detail gun or air brush where there really isn't that much overspray, so they probably weren't breathing in very many chemicals. they do some pretty trick stuff.

Get in touch with your local ARCO. The variety of Respitory protective equipment (RPE) available to protect your breathing zone available from them is large.
As long as you have the right filtered RPE spraying in your garage shouldnt be a problem. 3M make a good range that covers vapours mists and dusts.

Looks like we've got a few experienced painters here! And I was just gonna say, "House of Kolor...."

Anybody have some advice for a guy who can't ever keep a coat of paint from dripping, and seems doomed to a bike with orange-peel because he can't wet-sand to save his life?

Do any of you want to take on a Hawk paint job?

I wonder if they'll let you carry your bike on or make you check it.

I figure it'll fit in the overhead.

You know, I emailed Nub of Nub's Grafix (of American Chopper fame - he's the painter for Orange County Choppers), and he actually wrote me back. His shop is in upstate NY and I'm in Manhattan, so provided I win the lottery, I can go get myself a paintjob by Nubby himself.
