    How the Hawk Breathes

My hawk has a complete M4 exhaust, factory 3.0 jet kit and a K&N filter in the stock airbox. I was thinking about getting uni pods for it but I heard today while out riding that some folks just take the top off of the airbox with the K&N in there. If I did that would I need a separate breather filter? Who out there knows what the performance differences might be? I read somewhere that the Hawk motor is restricted on the intake so I'm thinking I'm not getting all I can out of the M4 with the current setup. Thoughts and comments appreciated, keep the rubber side down!

    air box

If you remove the lid to the airbox, or chop it tou can maintain the stock breathers, if you use pod filters you will need some small breathers for the carb vents/crankcase vent.

If you do lose the air box, I would be interested in purchasing it. I need it to do some moulding.

the parts on the right are the stock breather system.

I just added pics to the members rides section of my bike with the uni's I just installed. They are under "update on my winter project" the breather filters are the two smaller ones. Hope this helps.
90 Hawk. What can I do to make it better?

If you remove the lid, what is going to hold the K&N in place? I know the post in the center would keep it in place somewhat, but I would be afraid that the lower sealing edge would come up enough to let unfiltered air through.

Might be better to just cut the lid up so there were some strips remaining across the top to hold the filter down. Then again, it might not. Just something I thought of, don't know how it would work out.

I think I'm going to go with pods. Unless anyone knows if that makes the bike more vulnerable to the elements, my Hawk is a daily commuter in all conditions.

Pod filters are good - a little louder though.
The picture below shows the air breather filter set up when you loose the stock airbox. There is also an identical air filter on top of the rear crankcase cover.

                Hope this helps.
