    some general specifications

    Hi Guys,

I bought my 89 Hawk a couple months ago in race prepared trim so there are a couple things I'm not too sure about.

First, what is the redline of the stock motor? (not sure I have a honda tack and don't want to scatter the motor)

Second, I have 15:42 sprockets which are not far from the stock ratio, does anyone know what the speed (mph) is per 1000 rpm in 5th gear? and what kind of top speed is this bike capable of?

    A useful site I've found is http://www.hawkworks.net/

There is all kinds of information there, including a partial online manual, and tons of specs.

However, to answer your question the redline on stock tachs is 8,500, but you should be able to go up to 8,800 without blowing up the engine, if there isn't a rev limiter...does anyone know if there is? (I don't wanna find out!)

I believe the top indicated speed is about 125. Im not sure what the speed per 1000 rpm thingee is, cause I don't wanna do math and think about it, but I believe that's it.
    I know I dreamed you,
    A sin and a lie.
    I have my freedom,
But I don't have much time.
    Faith has been broken,
    Tears must be cried.
    Let's do some living,
    After we die.

I only ask about the speed because at the track I had a 3200 foot straight with an entry speed of about 50 and if my math is correct I could only hit about 110. I would have thought it could do more than that.

As far as rev limiter I don't think it has one, on one lap I thought I was in 5th but was only in 4th and looked at the tach halfway down the straight and saw 9000 so I shifted again.

      Thanks for the info.

Yea they have a rev limiter. Hits in a little over redline. If you have a 2 Brothers blackbox you can rev it up to 10,000 or something like that.

When I got my raceHawk the gearing was short (hence how I know about the rev limiter).

        Stock - 16/44 : 2.75 ratio
        Yours - 15/42 : 2.80 ratio

A stock Hawk is capable of about 110 on a good day if it's fully winged out. Mine's pretty worked (700cc and x8 cams) and I think it gets up to around 120'ish.

Well that confirms that my Hawk is at least reasonably healthy, My calculations based on ratios, seeing 8000 rpm and the tire rolling 75" for one revolution tell me I was makin 111 so I guess all is working properly.

I'm sure I saw 9000 on the one lap when I was in 4th but thought it was 5th. I have the stock ignition and didn't notice any kind of rev limiter at that speed. Of course as hard as it was working at that point I might not be able to feel it either.

Thanks for the info, I'm still getting to know this beast so every little insight helps.

Yea I've gone just over the redline and been okay (lil late shifting) but yea it does kick in. Probably at 9 I'm a lil busy to look down at that point

I take it you race your Hawk? If so what have you done to your clutch? I was noticing a little slippage on the shift to 5th and a couple times even after I was in 5th seeing it spin-up (through the clutch). When I took t he clutch apart I found the disks to be in good shape (B disk wear limit .091" mine .105", A disk wear limit .102" mine .118") and the springs are well above the wear limit. I can't find any aftermarket high perf springs or disks. Have you had any difficulty with your clutch and if so what did you do about it?

Yea I race my Hawk. I also have 2 teammates that race Hawk's.

Personally I don't use my clutch for upshifts, only downshifting. I also run GP style shift pattern. My tranny has also been undercut for quicker shifting.

I've needed a new clutch all season (since I bought the bike). If I shift into first, at a dead stop, it pulls a little bit. I'm installing a new one over the winter. As far as I know, there is just the stock clutch in there.

Well I just put mine back together with new disks (measured almost the same as the old ones) and since I couldn't get high perf springs I shimmed the original springs with .080" washers. Releases fine and feels a little heavier, now I just need some track time (Monday) to see if it holds.

Well the clutch held fine and I found the rev limiter. Trying to make a pass on the outside heading onto the front straight. While getting pushed wide by the passee and running out of track seems I forgot about the shifting thing...for a couple seconds!

                    Rev-limiter check
