  • Is this an M4 exhaust or another type ?

    Hi All,

Seen this exhaust advertised second hand as an M4 for the Hawk. Looking at other members bikes the mounting looks different and the silencer doesn’t appear to be rivetted so I’m a little concerned it could be a pup albeit a nice looking one. My concern is if it’s too loud and I can’t re-pack it I’ll soon be pulled over by PC plod. I like a louder than standard bike but not an offensive one

    What do you reckon ?

Doesn't look like an M4 to me. The pipe to the front cylinder is not anything like an M4.

Cheers matey, appreciated. It’s a lot of money to throw at something that isn’t right

Looks homemade with all those welded sections. I wouldn’t want it myself.

Have you thought about one of the Fuel systems? - they make a pleasing noise but are not - IMHO - offensive.

Yes Fuel is my other option but I like the longer pipe like the M4 and some TBR options. I can see from the Fuel website that they’re pretty popular with Hawk / Bros owners so I think I should stop faffing around and take the plunge. At least I know it’s made locally (in the UK) and they come over as a diligent company. Thanks for your input.

The quality of the Fuel systems is first class and their 'customer care' too. There's a great video on Youtube of them making the collector/link pipe for the NT650 - superb craftsmanship.

Could they be selling an M4 and just using a stock picture of another pipe?

It may be a modified m4 with another can?

Those pie cuts are not m4, but they are in the spot where the m4 has that jump pipe off the rear head..

I did ask them if this was the actual item and they said it was. It’s been restored to very good condition by the looks of it but my concern was mounting points and also rebuildability of the silencer. (Repacking)

To me, it would depend on cost.

The work looks good. The pipe, not as much. I thought d&d which to me is the works and loudest sounding hawk pipe, but some guys and galls love d&d it's all about preference. that said a can is not an expensive part to change. Assuming it's a slip on not welded to the mid pipe.

If that setup is 1/2 the cost of a good m4 it's probably worth the risk. If it's the same price I personally would keep looking.

Hmmm well I can’t really compare with what an M4 pipe is currently because I haven’t yet seen one for sale and consider them pretty unobtanium. This one is pricy for sure though so I’d only buy if it was an M4. I can’t afford to shell out alot of money on a very noisy pipe that isn’t easily rebuildable. My hunch is to pass and go with a Fuel but I thank everyone for their help, comments and consideration.

I am very happy with the stock headers and Fuel shorty muffler (baffle in). Snorty, but not too loud. Excellent mid-range.

This gives an idea of what an M4 looks like. Notice how the front pipe bends. Also, the can clamps on instead of using springs (unless you modify it like some of us have).

Fuel setup on my 89. Quieter than the SuperTrapp I have on my 88.
