Stopper ring 51405-mb4-003...what does it do and where does it go?

Part of the font fork assembly. It is shown as an external part (no.5). The official manual does not reference it in disassembly/assembly. Help

It's a thin gauge spring clamp that sits in the groove on each fork above the clips-ons to keep the clip-on from pulling off (after you release the clip-on clamping bolt).
