  • To coil or not to coil?

Can't get her to start. Getting above my pay grade here. She acts like she wants to start, seems to turn over but won't fire. New fuel pump, cut off relay also. Local dealer won't touch it. He mentioned possibly ignition coil. I just did the hawkworks manual front coil test. Put my multimeter to ohms and it showed 7.4? That's way over the 2.2 and up recommendation. Any ideas? I have searched here and sounds like these don't go bad alot. Just pulled the fuel line going to carbs, not a drop being pushed either and i checked the ignition fuse under the headlight and its good. I don't wanna drop $185 on a Mitsubishi oem replacement. Obviously this $40 knock off isn't right or something. I have heard that a early 99 sv650 pump can work too. Any suggestions? Thanks guys!

That Mitsu pump is used on a lot of bikes. I bought this for one for one of my VFRs off of a Yamaha YZF600 that had 14K miles and looks and works like brand new.

    $30 shipped.

There are 2 styles of "vents" on these, one that just has a drip channel and one that has a nipple (like the Hawk).

I also usually get a bunch formed fuel lines and clamps for other projects in the deal too. Also, only buy from sellers with a return policy. Test it upon arrival and contact with any issues. They will usually instantly refund without having to return the pump. I've only had one be bad out of probably 8 by now.

I use this chart to see what style is used on other models to increase my search.

I won't put anything but genuine Mitsu pumps on my bikes if I'm still using that style pump. K&L and TourMax are made in Japan Mitsu pumps too, but also expensive new. That's why I scour for good used ones.

as the capt says, it's better to use a genuine used oem pump than any commie chinese crap copy.

a rough check on a used pump is to measure ohms between the wires, where normal reading is a few ohms and zero [infinite resistance] means the pump is probably shot unless it can be resurrected by cleaning or replacing contact points.

yes, coils on these hondas very seldom fail, and it's better to see if they spark than measuring resistances.

So to check the spark idea Squirrel, pull off the plug cap and hold it next the cylinder or something and hit the starter and look for the spark?

kinda. you need a sparkplug on the end of the ht lead held against anything grounded. lots easier to see in the shade or dark.

Like Squirrelman says, be sure to ground it. Hold it by the cap, unless you want a little shock and put the sparky side against the engine or frame or bolt, nothing painted it needs a good ground. You should have a strong blue spark.

just eliminate the relay by putting a jumper wire at the relay plug, connecting the blue wire to the blue/black as illustrated in the service manual.

Check if you are getting fuel first. open the bowl drains.. Doed gas come out. If not, start there. If so, like Jerry said, Check for spark... If you have both and no fire, clean your carbs.

hawk will run on one cylinder. So if you have a bad coil, it would run. You would need two for it to not fire.

Bought in January. Cleaned carbs in December, new pilots, new mains, counted turns and all. Gotta do the jumper, didn't have time today. New pump, new relay, cheaper out.
I know you get what you pay for. But I'm getting ready to order the Honda oem relay, if the jumper makes the cheap pump run. Gotta be either or.
