  • NSR250 Radiator on NT650?

    I’ve been looking at options for changing the standard radiator for something better. I’ve checked out the forum archive so know that rads off various Kawasakis have been popular but felt that them being a good deal wider than stock wasn’t what I wanted.

    After looking at a million radiators on ebay, I wondering about the NSR 250 but can’t find any dimensions? As its a 250 I’m imagining its not too wide? Does anyone know? (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Radiator-...6/192722266526)

    I also like it that it’s curved, which was on my list of wants, for the look of it mostly but it has to be a good thing for cooling without increasing the frontal area of the bike.

    Another thing, the water pump is on the other side on the NSR. Does it matter if I swapped it around so that the hot water went in the bottom outlet and out at the inlet?

    This is for my next build. I can’t start on the actual building yet but can get the bits together.

    I think I answered the first part of my question. I finally found a note of the NSR250 dimensions on-line: 380mm wide x 285mm high x 22mm thick. If this is correct, it will be just right. The standard Hawk/Bros set up is around 375mm wide.

      It will fit so long as you do not plan on mounting the hawk fan to it. The Hawk radiator is flat, not curved, and if you try to hang that in the same spot your fan is going crunch into the rear of the front fender/tire. Just food for thought. If it is a really good radiator with lots of flow you may not need a fan, or if you never sit still for long.

        Looking at the parts diagrams for a Kawasaki with a curved radiator, I can see that they mount the fan on one side of the curve - would that not be an option here too?

          Depends on what you may have to relocate. There is a horn in there, engine mounts, and then the fan is much larger probably so you might be able to use the Kawi fan and fit it in and relocate anything else in the way. Anything is doable with enough time, engenuity, and money, LOL. The worst you can do is test fit and maybe it all works out. I was just throwing it out there that you may encounter some obstacles.

          I seem to recall one of our forum mods brought up the idea of a zx-7 rad as well with no fan and he has actual race experience so maybe @6 will read and chime in. That does look like a much larger radiator overall, so you probably are on the right track.

          Not sure if the "mention" function works on our version of vbulletin so hopefully he'll catch wind one way or another.

            i'm guessing that you have seen it already - but here's another vote for magna radiator - easy fit, stock fan, keeps 72 HP hawk cool in 95 degree all day thrashing.

              Yes, I agree that the magna radiator is a sensible upgrade. However, I decided that wanted a curved radiator, mostly for the look of the thing . Pretty much every part of the planned bike is going to be non-standard so why not?!

                I’ve now got the NSR250 radiator and think it quite promising.

                Because its curved and somewhat taller its got something like 40% more cooling area but isn’t wider than the standard item (with the end caps on).

                The NSR doesn’t have fan but I’m confident that some brackets could be fabricated should a one be necessary. There’s no provision for a thermal fan switch but one could be added to the outlet hose easily. The outlet is on the opposite side to the NT650 so the route to the pump will be a little more convoluted.

                I’ve got a VFR750 thermostat - they seem to be cheap and plentiful and have suitable plumbing for this set up.

                  It looks like it also holds more volume so if that is true then its going to be more efficient for sure.
