  • Instruments seized up

I am almost done restoring my NT650. bike was sitting under a tarp outside for years. Lots of stuff was seized or fubar on it.

Took it for its first maiden voyage just to realize that odometer and trip meter are seized up. Speed is shown, but not the mileage. Then I also got this high pitch wine from somewhere in the front of the bike. Pulling in the clutch didn’t affect the wine. But slowing down did make it disappear. I suspect it’s the gauges.

Has anyone successfully rebuild the stock gauges? Any words of advice?

    But the speedometer works?

The speedo guage is driven off the front wheel. There is a cable that runs from the gauges down there. The odometer is driven off the speedometer..

If the speedo is working bike odo is not then something is wrong in the guage cluster.

ParcNHawkis who I would text if that where a problem on my bike. Other may know too.. but little detail shit I usually ask Bob.

Yeah, that’s an odd one. Usually it’s both speedo and odo won’t work because the cable is bad, but that wouldn’t cause your problem.

Remove the cable (or at least the inner snake) until you get it sorted. Don't want to do any more damage if the speedo unit is saveable.

You can try spraying WD40 up inside the speedometer through the drive cable connector.
I've done that on 2 bikes where the speedometers were making significant noise.
The WD40 will not discolor the inside of the speedometer.
            It worked for both cases.

I had this loud noise a few months ago. I just took the thing apart and put some grease in the bearings, it fixed the problem: https://www.hawkgtforum.com/forum/ho...043#post967043

But mine didn't have an issue with the odometer, only the loud noise thing. The odometer works with a little train of gears, it is possible that one of these gears is worn or stuck.
In any case, you'll have to take the thing apart and check. Don't worry it is not too complicated.
As some other people pointed out, disconnect the drive cable to avoid any further damage if you plan on keeping riding the bike before fixing it.
