  • What gaskets are reusable?

I want to refinish the clutch and stator covers and adjust the valves on my '88 Hawk. In general, are any of those gaskets reusable? Thanks!

If you get/have a Cometic gasket, yes. Otherwise you will need to get new gaskets.

HPR - Hordpower Cometic Alternator Gasket Hawk - Cometic reusable alternator cover gasket.  Made of AFM material (foam rubber coated aluminum) that can be reused again and again.

The valve cover gaskets are normally reusable.

AS long as they are not baked and hardened. Not sure how often that happens but I have seen a couple that I would not reuse, personally.
88 Blue Hawk GT - Under construction but rideable (guest approved)
89 BlackHawk 2.0 - On the lift and being assembled
90 Hawk GT (color as to yet be determined) - Still on the shelf in crates

You can reuse the valve cover gasket, no problem.
The clutch cover gasket and alternator gasket might be reusable if you don't damage them during removal, but it's better to throw a fresh one.
You don't want to do all the hard work only to discover that you have a leak afterwards.

I usually grease the paper gaskets - give them a smear on both sides. As long as the engine mating faces are unspoiled, this seals up fine and the gaskets can be reused. I only use a sealant on metal to metal joints. I'm not sure but it may be that the grease helps to maintain a seal by keeping the paper supple. Anyway, it works fine in my experience. Also helps to prevent silicon pieces going into the oil and clogging up the motor.

The real "correct answer" is just the valve cover gaskets. The reality is i've reused all of them many times.
