  • Fixed it!

Hi all, long time no see!

Ever since I blew up my original motor and got the new one from Mike, I've never been quite happy with my carb settings. While everything worked as it should, I 'knew' it was running rich based on smell and performance (and exhaust deposits), but I couldn't get myself to pull everything off again to adjust.

FFWD to this week, my teeny 'just-off-idle' momentary sputter suddenly developed into a sporadic full on bogging out. Not so nice when starting a LH turn through an intersection in traffic. Open the throttle past 1/4 gave normal power delivery, but that meant I as either 'on' the throttle or off it, just to get around. This sputter happens at all speeds and RPMs, was clearly throttle position dependent. Unfortunately t was right at the speed maintenance position, so kind of annoying. I was reasonably certain it was fuel delivery related, as I had changed nothing and electrical was normal (I did check ground, plug wires and overall voltage performance as a matter of course).

After spluttering into the driveway after work, I decided enough was enough and yanked the carbs. Without full disassembly, I pulled the bowls, and sprayed and wired out the jets, checked the integrity of the diaphragms and generally just blew out every orifice I could. There was a bit of debris on one of the slides, possible culprit? Anyhoo, I took the opportunity to amend my fuel screws to 2 1/8 turns out each (from memory my main jets are 162/165 and the needles are set to the 3rd clip, I think, and I live at 2200') to reduce the richness of the idle exhaust smell (my only real personal guide to mixture).

Good news, the splutter is gone, and my butt dyno says that throttle response is much crisper that ever before, and the bike pulls a little harder and definitely smoother than before. No backfiring or other lean conditions that I can tell, it does run a touch hotter than before but it was a scorcher today and the needle only just bumped off the bottom.

    Feeling good about fixing things.

Easy on the throttle, steady on the gears, roll her over gently and she'll last for many years.

seems like your thermostat may be stuck open ? on a hot day id expect half scale.

Maybe, but my commute is only 6 miles at ~45mph, so it usually doesn't get off it's butt at all. Something to consider though...

Was hot here again yesterday, stop & go on the way to work, temp needle came up to just below half, no fan.

so you never wired in a manual fan switch ?

at temps at or over three-fourths scale the fan should be running

You might want to check the fan to see it works. Also a consideration is a lower temp for it to activate. The make one
88 Blue Hawk GT - Under construction but rideable (guest approved)
89 BlackHawk 2.0 - On the lift and being assembled
90 Hawk GT (color as to yet be determined) - Still on the shelf in crates
