  • Hordpower’s Lithium-Compatible Regulator/Rectifier

Looking into the “new” regulator/rectifier being sold on Hord’s site. Tired of killing my Shorai batteries in the past.

Has anyone tried the new R/R and have some feedback?

I have Rick's Electonics Reg/Rect. Works fine with the featherlight lithium battery. Best of all, it has mounting slots, not holes-- which makes it makes it much easier to install without tearing the whole subframe apart. It seemed like essential insurance, because you DO NOT want to overcharge a lithium battery. It is like hollering FIRE in a crowded garage.

I bought from Hord - running an Antigravity battery and have had no issues thus far. Since this is a race bike, it doesn't see much usage outside of track days and race weekends; I have the lithium compatible battery tender that I keep connected when not in use.

Five years on a Battery Tender branded lithium battery.

        Stock charging system.

Never left on a charger -- trickle, float, maintain, anything.

        Zero problems.

Same as Parc for 3.5 yrs. although I do charge the battery at the beginning and end of the riding season.

I suspect if you are regularly riding and the battery is being charged and discharged regularly they don't usually have too many issues but if putting it on a standard tender and not riding very often that might be the source of some of the early demise of the lithium batteries.

The charge/discharge curve for lithium is far different than lead batteries. Depending on the setpoint of a reg/rec/ or the algorithm of a wall charger, you can easily over or undercharge a Li chemistry battery. Worst case, you smoke the battery. And in some cases, you might be taking it to 95% voltage but only 50% charge, or whatever. I'm too lazy to look up the charts.

I’m gonna try one and see how it goes. I’ve always used a Shorai charger with their batteries, but I’ve had mixed results. I have a Battery Tender branded one with their Li Charger on another hawk. Maybe swap out that R/R too.

I am not bashing a brand but I seem to notice the Shorai batteries tend to come up often when I see this topic. It may just be a coincidence overall though. Just an observation.
