  • RS125 tail subframe questions

Does anybody have drawings, templates or any other knowledge to pass down to somebody building a subframe for a RS125 tail.
I am pretty sure I will be going the aluminum flat stock route. I do have a few WW bits I am looking to use. Big thanks to 69Falcon for those parts.
I have a Mikuni fuel pump so I can get rid of the electric pump.

My biggest hang up centered around relocating the battery using existing harness. If you can get that and the other under cowl junk zip tied nice and tight, the rest is easy. I relocated the full size gel battery inside a foam wrap in the pointy tail. put a trickle charge connection accessible outside the tail.

+1 on the relocation of various components. I am using an RS125 tail on a Hiperform subbie. I ditched the stock radiator reserve tank and placed the battery in that location.

Thats the first I have heard of putting the battery there. Is it common to delete the reserve tank. Did you go with a lithium or standard battery?

You’ll still want an overflow tank for the coolant, lots of guys will mount one up on the frame. And be forewarned, if you put the battery where the stock coolant reservoir sits, you have to remove the shock for access. (99% certain on that, others may correct me.)

I've spent most of my money on women, beer, cars and motorcycles. The rest of it I just wasted.

I replaced the stock reserve tank with a Motion Pro tank attached to the left engine hanger. I also used a smaller lithium (Shorai) battery. I will take some pictures tonight and post them up so you get a better idea.

I believe I uploaded all the subframe files previously...might want to check them out.

I was looking at those today. Depending on how much it cost I might have them cut by a company, or use them as a template and get adventurous on my own. I do have a set of your side brackets and top plate.
Thanks for maaking them available to the public.

This gives an idea of one option.

And the starter relay tucked up near where the rear if the tank sits and repositioning the reg/rec.

                          Here is a link to my shared album on my blue Hawk when I was chasing an RS style on the hiperform subframe;

I raised the seat pad on a pedestal so the tail would better fit the lines of the bike and also had the CDI, RR, and starter solenoid under the seat pan and allow it to get air flow. I started working on a way to mount a Shorai lithium battery but I realized it was larger than I hoped and I could build or buy a smaller battery pack and at that point I kind of lost interest on the project, wanted to ride, put the tail back to stock and have that tail project shelved for now. I'll be revisiting on another hawk that will be "race inspired" soon and improving on what I started when I do but these photos may help with some layout ideas.

90 Hawk GT (color as to yet be determined) - Still on the shelf in crates

There is a lot of fitfo involved in that mod.

Doing one for my son now.. If you go with a smaller battery you can bent up a little battery box out of some sheet metal and mount the battery between the rails of the sub frame. That is what we did on the race bike (kinda, we more hung it...) and what i plan on doing with Wes's bike. Just build your box out of cardboard till you get it right. Its easier and the first 60 or 70 boxes that you think will work don't.
Don't spend money and buy, spend time and learn.

This is about as far as I got with the Shorai lithium battery. In spite of the size it is very light but at the time I didn't have a tig welder and knew that screws and bolts would probably end up vibrating loose and cause issues. I then realized with one of the smaller pack style batteries it would be smaller and lighter. The tail I have has a little draft sheild that screws on to the underside that blocks wind off so figured I could then just either use industrial velcro or zip ties and use that to fasten on the inside of the draft shield, and that way to access or change the battery just drop the draft shield and it's easy to access and change or do whatever.
