'88 Hawk 650 - tell me what you think...

    Link to pics

Picked up an '88 650 about a month ago and decided I would share some pics. You can see that the bike is currently oragen but it will receive the flat black rattle can treatment in the interest of saving money.

I also plan to fabricate an aluminum bracket to hold the Vapor and the stock Tach becuase we all know that the Tach is wayyyyy off on the Vapor. I'll also either ditch the head lights or at least lower them and install new signals (front and rear). I'll fab a new license plate bracket as well.

The stock exhaust silencer has rusted guts and has a tendency to rattle. I'm actually thinking about making a custom muffler with a fiberglass outer shell and stock internals....but thats probably just a pipe dream?

I'm not sure exactly what the bike is missing or needs because this is my first hawk. Does anyone know if that is a 900RR shock? Let me know what you guys think!

Damn... that's a serious bracket for the guage!

It's definitely not the stock shock... but I can't tell what it is from the pic.
I like the orange... be a shame to cover that up with rattle can flat black!

The orange is supposed to be from a Ford Mustang...it really is nice but I'm not an orange guy. The bracket is pretty heavy duty and I think he was going to clean it up but ran out of time.

I can take more pictures of the shock and there is what appears to be a damper up underneath the seat? Also...if this is a forum member's ex-bike....let me know!

        Welcome to the board.

That looks like you've got a Fox on there. If it hasn't been done recently, it will most likely need servicing. Fox don't make moto shocks anymore, but they do still service them. Stick a telescoping magnet down the forks (without the springs in) to see if it's got emulators. They should come out with the magnet, if nothing comes out (nor does it come halfway up and drop), you will want to look to sort the front end to match the upgraded rear.

Yeah, lower those headlights and sort the signals.

I got a Hawk that looked alot like that and paid $1000.

I also got a Hawk that looked ALOT better with some nice mods for $2000.

              What did you pay?

BTW that looks like a 900rr shock.

                $1800.....Doh! Little high huh?

I'm looking into building one of these to use the Vapor and the stock Tach. This will replace that 120 lb. job i've got on there now.

This finite analysis isn't accurate...just downloaded Solid Works and was playing around.

I'll take more pictures of that shock and try to identify it. I was told by the previous owner is was a 900 rr shock but I wouldn't mind it being a Fox. You guys think it is a Progressive?

I wouldn't say that is High.

I think you did pretty good. Hawks are rather rare and I just seem to stumble over good deals.

                  Congrats!

Pretty sure it is a 900rr. Sorry.

Depends on where you live! I paid $1900 for a mostly stock 24K '89. It had some essential stock items replaced (new forks, recent tires etc) and ss brake lines, corbin seat, no-brand windshield. In NYC, bikes fetch slightly higher prices. The bike's rideable and needs nothing, and I'm too new to want to travel far out and ride a bike back.

Under 2G for a mostly stock Hawk is good, depending on its shape. Whether you can find one for less seems to depend on where you live and availability.

My vote on the shock is a Progressive 420 series. I have the progressive and it looks exact. (from that view)

Get more pics. Does it have a remote resevoir?

edit: after staring at the pic provided.... the valve near the top is slightly different. But..... more pics please.

So what kind of shock is it? I couldn't find any numbers on it anywhere so I'm pretty much lost on this one.

                              Not a CBR.

I will look at my Progressive again and let ya know.
