    Broken Hawk!

What's up people? I've always wanted a Hawk (ever since high school). I finally aquired one over a year ago. It's been downed a couple of times by the time I got it and I've downed it once thereafter. BOO! So I've been slowly rebuilding it over the last several months, and hopefully I can start her up again in a couple of months from now.
It's scary how slow I am!

'88 HawkGT - crashed as all hell - Hiperform subframe, VFR rear wheel, F3 front end, Penske shock.

'05 Ducati S2R - Monstrack mirrors, CRG levers, Evoluzione clutch slave cylinder, ProItalia tail chop, Arrow damper, Nichols flywheel, Suburban Machinery bars

You should get some pictures up in the Members' Rides secton so we can follow the progress of your project!

Got any trick parts you're gonna bolt on during the rebuild, or are you keeping her more or less stock?
    I know I dreamed you,
    A sin and a lie.
    I have my freedom,
But I don't have much time.
    Faith has been broken,
    Tears must be cried.
    Let's do some living,
    After we die.

It's been sitting for a little bit... I'll take my S2R in for its 600 mile service, and hopefully will be able to start working on the bike again.

I got the Hawk stock, with cbr clip ons and some napolean mirrors.

So far, I've gotten a hiperform subframe, nissan master cylinder from another downed bike, new headlight, penske shock, vfr rear wheel (w/170 BT014), CBR f3 front end (I kept the stock triples).
I still need to fabricate a tail section - I might go with a Monster seat and possibly a tail cowl. Since I also detonated my gauges, I'll probably steal the Veypor tach and speedo from my now destroyed FZR 600. I still haven't decided what to do - if I'd like to go windscreen or not. Also I kinda scraped the living crap outta my headers and stock pipe. I was thinking of putting turnouts on the stock headers with a little baffling.

When you do the tail let me know how it goes - I will be doing the same mod and have no idea how I am going to do it. The parts are on order, and I imagine I will be doing it in the off-season. Carlson fab'd his owner battery tray, welds and all, and from the photos it looks great. I am try to think if I could make one with brackets rather than welds, but I haven't gotten that far yet -

If I figure out the seat, I'll definitely tell you how I did it. The only difference is the Hiperform subframe... It is radically different from the stock one, so I'm not sure how it will translate to a Hawk subframe.

Kenny! TURNOUTS, yeah!!! I've got one on my Hawk attached with a Muzzy coupling, no baffle! I want to take that off and put on two turnouts, directly on the header pipes (losing my centerstand in the process though). Know where I can get some with a small enough inside diameter? I think we need 1 1/4", right?

You know, everyone else gives me flak for wanting straight pipes on a Hawk...

Yeah, it was like 1 1/4" I believe. I got the pipes from one of them Harley catalogs... IIRC they were made by EMGO. The only problem with going with two straight pipes is exhaust scavenging. It'll make tuning the motor a bitch too. But, since it'll look cool and the Hawk isn't the performance machine that it used to be, I figure who the heck cares?

Kennie, do you have a web address/tel. # for that catalog? I need to get my hands on those turnouts. I've been running a homemade straight pipe (rather fugly) since I bought the Hawk, so I've reconciled with the whole no-backpressure thing.

http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/...atalogId=10101 try this... I guess it was the 1 1/2". I might try some of them mini mufflers in the pipe.

Too loud, or too lean? I like my loud pipes, but the lack of backpressure's giving me a little stumble around 4.5k RPM

Do you have pics of the pipes on your bike? They look long. I'm looking for something that doesn't obstruct the view of the wheel at all. I'll probably get them (they're half the price of what I've found) and hack off the extra length - instead of turndowns, I'll have slashcut pipes I guess. Is that bolt attached to the pipe itself, or is it part of a collar? I want to rivet mine together.

It'll be too lean - but I'll need to take a look at the carburation at some point anyways. Here's a couple of pics of the turnouts on stock Hawk headers.

And you can see from the next picture how much cornering clearance you'll gain from the turnouts.

I don't think that it obstructs the rear wheel too much (definitely not as much as the stock exhaust!
