  • Microwave's WTF

So a while back I accidentally microwaved the dogs food in his metal bowl. It worked. No issue.. weird.

Last night Kristen got up at 2:00 am. Grabbed a stick of butter, threw it into the frying pan, put it in the microwave, microwaved it for 2min.. (it only gets stranger from here, but that's not the point).

why are we able to microwave metal with no issues at all??

Depends on what kind of metal and for how long. Not a good idea but not a problem for short periods. My MIL once started a fire in an RV with a twist tie.

Metal arcing against other metal is the larger issue. Toss a crumpled up ball of aluminum foil in there for a couple seconds if you want to have some fun (and possible break the microwave).

The large circular shape doesn't allow sparking or arcing. Metal tines on forks do. If the instructions say it's OK, then fine, but otherwise it's not worth it to try.

This wasn't anyone following instructions. This was a sleep walking incident.

I can't speak as to what type of metal is OK but about 30 years ago I used to do apartment maintenance and a woman started some apple slices in butter in a small tupperware dish. I guess her idea was she was frying the apples in the butter??? Not sure but honestly sounds like a tasty little treat when you think about it. Maybe a shortcut version of the apple slices they do at Cracker Barrel or similar... Anyway, she told me she only ran it for 30 seconds, and I truly have no idea how long she actually ran it for but what I learned that day is not to melt butter in a tupperware dish in the microwave because it definitely caught on fire.

I once in a drunken state put an unopened metal foil vacuum pack of chicken and noodles in a microwave oven. No idea how long they cooked for but they made a big bang and a lovely mess. I never heard a thing I was unconscious

                Hahaha.

                Welp, and now you know.

The real question, did you still eat it?

All I want to say is that you made me do way more research on microwaves and metal in them than I ever wanted to do. So thanks for that!
