  • My other spider ...

I found a black widow in my garage late last year. They're neat, so I built it a little home and I feed it crickets and stinkbugs.

    I named her "Natasha", obviously.

Here she is perking up after I dropped a stinkbug in there last Sunday.

Widows can go an extremely long time without eating - her last meal before this stinkbug was a cave cricket in late December.

OMG! I’m generally not one to get creeped out by spiders and snakes, but a Black Widow is on a totally different level! No thank you buddy. I have a nice size 10 boot for those badass bitches that pop up without invitation in my garage…

flyinelvis any other spider that I come across in my shop receives that fate, but, idk, black widows are just super neat and pretty rare. I bet this ol' girl has been doing a great job keep the other pests at bay, so I may as well reward her with a nice home where she can't kill any of the people that I actually DO want in my garage.

My kid was pretty unsure about Natasha until he saw that she has the exact same symbol on her abdomen as Black Widow in the Marvel movies (which obviously is where I got the name from, lol).

I did a bit of research to see how much space they need, how often they eat, and what kind of places they like to live.

They tend to stay in one place and wait for food, and prefer to be up off the ground a bit, and they can go several weeks between meals. They also get most of their water from their food, so I just do a spritz with a spray bottle every couple weeks but otherwise it doesn't need any attention.

The enclosure is from Amazon. I picked something taller than it is wide so I could stack up some sticks but keep it otherwise sparse so I can see the spider.

I had a Snake one time. It was a Boa. Is was just over 6', a BIG boy. Traded a GS850 for him. Kept him in a tank in the kitchen, took him out to play a couple times a day.

              Well he escaped.

My kids who where 3 and 5 at the time where unable to come over the house for a few weeks because Creature was big enough to take them out. Found him dead in the heat vent at the furnace and eventually then things went back to normal.

I didnt find that situation stressful.

              Your spider, i find stressful.

But wicked cool. Do you know its sex?

It's a female - black widows have pretty high sexual dimorphism. The males are way smaller and brown. Also, not considered dangerous unlike the females.

Are you going to get a male and breed?
