  • 87 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe... May come home.

Mr. frinesi2 found a tbird on some obscure internet site, then alerted the only 9th gen psychopath he could think of.. was nice enough to reach out to the gentleman and then put us in touch.

Now, looks like on Saturday (read probably 4:00am Sunday morning) it may role into Salisbury...

Anyone who understands my obsession will get it. The rest of y'all may think im off my rocker.

This is a HUGE project for me to take on with no enclosed shop... But I have to give it a go. I'll post as it goes if anyone is interested.

    Anyone have any thunderbird stories?

Usually don't count my chicken till they are in the driveway, but I think this is going to work out.

While it's not for me, I understand. That would be a cool get.

Its not for most, but to me, there has never been a cooler car.

9th Gen T-Birds where my dads and my's favorite cars. From the day he brought home an 84 5.0 with the sport pack in 85 when i was 3, until the day he died in 2011. It was (and for me still is) all about the aero birds. And the turbo coupe, was the apex of the 9th gen (i'd argue of t-birds, or even cars, in general.).

The issue, is getting parts, is NOT EASY!

I'm stoked. Always glad to help push a friend towards their automotive obsession. Hope it all works out!

That one looks like it has a long way to go, but yeah, pretty much the apex of the 80s!

Yup... Ya... Looks like it needs most things, But it runs and drives (popped a break line, so it doesn't stop) and he said the rust is mostly limited to doors (comes with a set of rust free ones) and shock towers, but he says they are savable. We will see what his idea of savable it, but i can fix that either way =.

THis is not going to be a quick fix-er-up job... . . This is gonna be some work,

Never had this model, but had the turbo four in an XR4Ti. Fun when it ran. Heat management was a problem.

Xr4ti (basically the escort in England from what I heard. . . Lucky fuckers.) Was DOPE!!!! I love those fucking cars. My stepfather had one for a while when I was growing up. It burnt to the ground in the breakdown Lane on route 95.

I had no issue with you management my last Turbo Coupe, but I did keep overheating it, because the heater core went and it kept blowing head gaskets... Hoping the heater core on this one is good, because that's a nightmare of a job.

How long did you have the merkur?

Nope in England it was called the Sierra, XR4 Cosworth was the beast to have. Used to rally with a guy, who ran one, quick through the forests, Kept me on my toes navigating. The R/S 500 was a peach

I had it about two years. My son was turning 15 and I didn't want him to start driving in that car. The combination of power and swing axles was not good for a beginner.

                      Epic!

What was the escort then? I remember when I was over there in 2001 the hot kids car was the escort and it was rwd turbo.

They're pretty similar. I think the Sierra is a little bigger.

Two mates, loads of banter, a modified Ford Escort RS Cosworth Monte Carlo and a Sierra RS500 Cosworth with a combined 1000bhp...

Escorts ran from cross flows to twin cams, plus for rallying the coswoth which you are thinking about I figure . Ford ran RS 2000 in rallying Roger Clark being one of their great drivers.

I've spent most of my money on women, beer, cars and motorcycles. The rest of it I just wasted.
