Can't remember if I've shared this here before, but back in undergrad I built a 3-wheeler for a junior design course. The project was to build a vehicle powered by an unmodified 18 volt cordless drill and had to be able to pass under a maximum height of 36" or something. The winner was the vehicle that got the most laps around the quad in 5 or 10 minutes.

We decided to do a reverse-trike with giant wheels to minimize rolling resistance. We also got our hands on a neat planetary hub CVT (Fallbrook Tech Nuvinci, I think). Since the rules said we could do unlimited battery swaps during the run, we gutted a battery pack, ran some cables from the connector to a relay board, and ran that board to a bank of as many batteries as we could get our hands on. That was all controlled by a rotary switch on the steering wheel that let the driver swap to a new battery every lap.

We kind of slapped it together last-minute but it tied for 2nd place. I gave a lot of design advice to (and welded a lot of parts together for) the winning groups and one of them couldn't even pass the maximum height without deflating their tires.

Those were the days. Now that design class does little cranes or water pumps or some boring shit like that.
