  • ColorRite Tempest Grey Paint

I ordered a can and started doing a repaint, but the color was way off, more like charcoal. Not quite solid black, but close. Since I happened to have a 2nd '88, I took a picture of both next to each other and sent it to their customer service. Someone very helpful, named Jenny, worked with their production facility, had them mix up a fresh batch and they got the same results. Their formula is wrong. They refunded my purchase price and I offered to send them a fender for matching but they declined.

So, in summary, their mix is off, but good solid company. I've ordered from them once before for my Yamaha Venture and was happy with the results.

I'm going to work with my local paint supplier to see if we can find a stock color that is close enough. They have a collection of color chips that would fill 1/2 a library, so should find something close enough since doing a full repaint. And yes, I'm boring, sticking to stock (or close) color...

I ended up going with Ford Magnetic Metallic. Its a darker grey, but this is the color of my son's 2016 Mustang and I've always liked it. Even though the base is darker, the metallic really brightens it up in the sun and the color really comes to life. I used PPG's Envirobase HP (waterbase) for the base color. My local paint shop does custom mixes in rattle cans. It was about 1.5 cans for the whole bike, 3 layers. Very easy product for amatuer painters, like me. For clear, I used SprayMax 2k Glamour Clear, also in a rattle can. Love this stuff, goes on easy and levels out nicely on its own. Its good enough to leave as is, but I am going to do a cut & buff on it to finish the job properly. I did 3 coats (two light, one medium) before applying decals, then another 3 coats after decals.

Oh, and the 1st photo shows what the colorrite tempest grey looked like, compared to stock.

Decals are from ebay seller 'reprodecals', very happy with them (decals and the seller)

Great color. It turned out really well. I like the slightly darker shade.

        Looks great.
Did you allow several days for the paint to degas before applying the decals and doing final clear coating.

I gave it a little over a day. The Spraymax 2k clear has a 12 hr cure time and 24 hrs to polish, according to its spec. But now you got me a little nervous.

Was just curious-don't be nervous. I have never worked with the materials you are using so have no experience with them.
If the decals do bubble, obviously you will have to allow for a longer degas on the next Hawk.
One way to aid the degas process is to sand the freshly painted surface after the appropriate waiting time.

I really want to paint hawk number 2 yellow, but not sure these decals will look good on yellow. If I can find someone to do black decals, then it will be yellow. Definitely learned a lot doing this first one and will give the next one a bit more time to cure and degas, to be extra safe. Thanks for the comments, suggestions and feedback.

That's usually what I do with my paint work. I give it about a day. Sometimes longer if I have to let it sit for a bit before I can get to it.
